institutions in the world who also play [Division I] sports could be abandoned in this latest chapter of realignment is an indictment of college athletics," Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick told ESPN this week.

Notice that the Notre Dame AD doesn't refer to Cal as a the #1 public university which implicitly concedes that many privates are better. Instead he describes Cal accurately as one of the world's very best academic institutions. Would that the Cal community, its PR personnel, and so many members of the Cal family including those on BearInsider, would do the same.

I may have to rethink my antagonism to Notre Dame sports.

Same here. And my hostility toward even Stanford has been deescalated. And I hate Fox Sports.

On another board, I talked about how the recent events have been an eye opener about who Cal's friends are. I'm not too surprised about Stanford. We've had a long connection with them even if they have soft pedaled our rivalry a bit in the last decade or two. However, they are in the same boat as us now and self preservation requires us to work together. I thought we had other friends in the PAC-X, but I haven't seen much effort out of anyone to help us out. Really, the only school that has spoken up and tried to lend a hand is Notre Dame. They didn't have to do this. My feelings about Notre Dame have been mildly negative in the past, but they've moved way up in my estimation in the last few weeks.

Our opposition to UCLA leaving, enlisting the Regents against them, was not a good strategic move for getting into the B1G. We alienated people that we now need to help us.

Notre Dame is a great ally to have. Hopefully we take advantage.

The guy in charge in Sacramento is what started that whole episode, not anybody in Berkeley (or Regents writ large for that matter).

Cal is a good school but it's no Berkeley

While I appreciate the quote from ND's AD, I also note that an intact ACC preserves ND's unique deal where they remain independent with 5 football games per year against ACC schools.

Notre Dame will watch out for Notre Dame, and if Cal and Stanford are useful pawns, so be it.

Are we sure UCLA would've been eager to help? Because it sure seemed like while USC is the one that stabbed the Pac-12 in the back, UCLA went ahead and helped push it in nice and deep. Now we expect them to grab that same knife and pull us up to their level?

They're already naturally incentivized to find solutions that increase Cal's payout if only to reduce the amount they may owe on Calimony.

Of all the crap that has gone down in the past year, Calimony is the one wildcard that could really spice things up in the end. Now I think it is more bite than bark but imagine hamstringing them with a penalty that splits the difference between the B1G deal and whatever piddly amount we get.

If that really was the intent, not setting the penalty until all the pieces landed was the smartest thing someone supporting Cal athletically has ever done.

It's all fun and games and cordial in said boat until someone gets hungry or horny. My guess is we get horny and the furdies get hungry. This is not going to end well.

We were assured at the time that it was Carol Christ who was leading the charge. You don't think that if we told Newsome, "Just get us in too" that he wouldn't have tried to get more money for a second UC? Why would he do something for Cal that went against our wishes?

In case you might have missed my earlier post, one of the main reasons we have ND squarely on our side and that of the Cal-Furd package to the ACC is that the President of ND is practically a Cal alum, having earned his Masters of Theology in 1988 from the Graduate Theological Union, which even back then had academic ties with UCB, and the ND AD also is a Furd alum (Old Red?), with a JD from the Farm.

I haven't gone through the fast-scrolling ACC threads, but does anyone have a good picture of the Cal-Furd ACC expansion vote, which schools are blocking it as of now?

FSU, Clemson, UNC, and NCSU

The support and opposition has nothing to do with the value Cal/Stanford bring to the conference. It's entirely based on protecting/terminating the GOR.

So what if Cal-Furd agree to forego the right to vote on the GOR for a number of years in return for an invite? That was mentioned before somewhere. Is it part of any negotiations? ARE there any negotiations? We're in an information desert.

We don't know. We can only infer what's happening based on who opposed and who supported.

On behalf of Jim Knowlton he would like to ask you and the rest of Bear Insider to keep coming up with ideas as he has none himself.

Thanks for posting this.

Recent events......including just about everything our new basketball coach has done...have caused a sharp decrease in my disdain for Stanford.
