Anyone returning to the Cal campus for the first time in a while for football games this fall might be surprised by all the new construction projects both on campus and in the city center. Lots of planning and successful fundraising made the Cal projects possible.

There is a nice summary of current and future Cal construction projects here: https://news.berkeley.edu/2023/08/21/flurry-of-major-campus-construction-projects-to-mark-new-academic-year

I appreciate the effort to try to preserve some of the central campus open space. I do wonder if at some point the campus planners might decide to shrink the size of the "back yard" behind University House. It seems like it might be possible to squeeze in a new building just west of North Gate Hall along Hearst Avenue and still preserve much of the expanse and beauty of the area directly behind University House.

For a central campus with now 45K students, I still appreciate the tranquil spots on campus and the fact that there is still green space.

45k students now? We HAVE to get them to help fill Memorial. It is now 50% more embarrassing than it was for us to not do this in the 90s.

To be fair, that's 32K undergrads and 13K grad students. I'll cut the grad students a break.

I'm not sure how many students buy season tickets for Cal football these days, but if Cal were able to attract even just 1/4 of the undergrads to regularly attend football games, that student section would be rocking.

If people eligible for social security were NOT to buy tickets, there would be 10,000 people there.

The People's Park dorm design, putting aside all of the legal BS, is truly hideous. Can Sebastabear fix this too?

C'mon - compared to how that site has looked for decades that design is a thing of beauty!

Right. And dorms aren't normally things of architectural beauty.

During orientation week they have workers approaching students with a $125. deal for all home football (plus the Stanford away game) and basketball tickets. Thats about $5 per game. i dont know how much less expensive it could be

One nit: I didn't think the $125K student football season ticket covers the Big Game (away game at Stanford this year). Buying the season combo ticket does cover all the home basketball games, and hopefully Mark Madsen will help get basketball back to be at least a palatable viewing experience for the students.

As for the complaints about the rendering of the proposed dorm to be built (one day) at People's Park, the building itself is fine (even if it does look a bit like the offspring of a union between a Tahoe ski lodge and the old Tolman Hall breezeway). No, my issue with those renderings is leaving any grassy area or open space available for those People Park types to recongregate on university property.

That's exactly my take too. Get rid of the green space. Concrete it over. Or, enclose it.

when I was at Cal they capped how many season tickets were available to students. not sure if that is a yearly thing. a lot of folks buy and never go. they should expand the student section and do the following: knock down the price, and include a cheap season pass for all revenue sports (football, MBB) with student registration. if students knew they could attend sporting events game any time they want and just show their student ID to get in, then it would get packed. remove all the thinking from it. tell students that its first come first serve, if the student section fills then you can't get in, but wont be a problem if they expanded the student section

That might work for the students who come from money, but students who need grants and scholarships just to attend college won't pay for the combo package. That money would be better spent on food and rent. Speaking from experience from my time as a student who turned down similar ticket deals.

Maybe there could be some way for students to earn tickets with volunteer work? Maybe even just posting Cal football ads on their social media platforms?

I would've been happy with earning tickets for volunteering. I volunteered quite a bit as a student. I don't know enough about today's kids to opine ad to whether they would go along the idea, though.

They will volunteer for their resumes and to get into med school or whatever, not for free football tickets.

Where are the Student Ambassador barracks? You know, for those brave souls that are going to insure the safety of the dorm residents and "negotiate" with the locals that will be relaxing in the open spaces that will be preserved by the project.

I did get to attend games for free as a freshman by volunteering as security. As I recall I worked part of the game and was free to watch from wherever the rest of the time. The best part was the on field duty.

I didn't know that was an option. Had I known, I would've volunteered as security to the basketball games! (Cal football was horrible when I was in college, thanks to the "coaching" of Tom Holmoe.)

I did get some free basketball tickets when I was in college, but that was thanks to the generosity of a faculty member who gifted me a pair of tickets he had. I brought my girlfriend with me and we had a good time (though I don't remember who won).

First, doing it for free football tickets is a transaction too.

Second, when they realized the world is transactional and competitive, more so than it was even for us.
