I think that is the most accurate issue. we had a significant drop off in talent after Ott and Ifanse. Not sure why the TE's arent used more, some veer triple option would be nice given Sam's speed and mobility, but I think that requires a back the size and speed of Ott, as well.BearSD said:They did revise, to some extent. They saw early on that the pass blocking was not going to hold, so Finley (slow release, glued to the pocket) came out and Jackson went in. That helped, but only to a certain extent, as we all saw.calumnus said:BearSD said:eastbayyoungbear said:Vegas Bear said:
The runs up the middle were incredibly frustrating. Obviously Cal coaches believed there was something there that clearly wasn't. Just poor game planning
The coaches bet our o-line was better than it was. Wasn't the case.
Agreed, I think that's it. The coaches thought Auburn was down, compared to the better Auburn teams of several years ago, and underestimated both Auburn's pass rush and run defense.
Maybe going into the game, fine, but after getting a total of 28 yards of offense and 3 points on three "drives" in the 1st quarter (1.6 yards per play, 9 yards per possession), maybe you revise that thinking?
As discussed in another (newer) thread, adjustments can only be effective if the personnel can make them effective, and the o-line still needs work. People can talk 'til they are blue in the face about hypothetical new schemes, but IMO the real solution is recruiting, recruiting, recruiting. That Auburn LB who had a dozen tackles is a great player, but he won't have a dozen tackles against a team that has recruited elite o-linemen.
think folks may have overlooked the missing play from Matthew Cindric. He's out for the season and that is a huge setback.
