I have not heard it said this way:

To each player: When you are on the field, every play is a win/lose proposition. Every Single Play.

Not just carry out your assignment, but carry it out as a win. Each play.

(Should every player be responsible for the success of the team on every play, then? Yes - the win any one of you gets on a given play could result in the game winning play. Play like that.).

"Just go out and have fun!" sounds more like Wilcox's style

I mean Wilcox's teams, especially the defense, bring it. He just can't recruit high schoolers has no idea what's going on in 2 of the 3 phases of the game.

I want them flying around out there.

"[Pro] football is a game,
It is win or lose, not life or death.
But ... say that in the summer,
For winter brings the playoffs,
And a season is at stake."
-Sam Spence and John Facenda, NFL Films

Winter is upon us.

I am so sick of hearing, "they're competing," "they're flying around out there," and all the other excuses.

There was a school janitor who stood in one spot in a hallway and swept it incessantly. Year after year. When you're not out there to win - each play - you are going through the motions.

NFL films played no small part in making the NFL what it is today.
Absolutely top notch in every way, not the least of which were their poetic narratives.

As a poster once said here nearly 5 years ago . . .

I get why you feel you need to post that. And I don't disagree. But if you actually need to post this, if this actually could have an impact because it needed to be said, and it comes from a fan website, we have already lost.

I was on the UConn faculty for some time and followed Gino and the Women's bb program. He always got great players, but very rarely the best, especially lately, but they frequently won the national.

I got that thought from him - every possession is a win/lose proposition. Frequently, when his players were interviewed, before and after grad, they repeated that slogan as a key to their motivation. Almost all, regardless of talent, admitted that it helped them play "above the level they thought they had." It seemed to help them focus and max out each time on the chance immediately in front of them.

(Granted, he had them practicing against men players. A practice that others have now adopted. Where can we get better players to practice against?)

I see that from time to time in JW's Ds, but I'm not sure he would even allow that mindset in his Os, no matter the OC.

I understand, Rushin. Not denigrating the thought. On the contrary, I'm saying if they haven't already been taught that, it's already over.

I did a little coaching in youth sports. EVERYONE at every level taught this little chestnut which is a more simplistic version of what you are saying and I'm sure you know it. Ask the kids "What is the most important play in baseball?" (or whatever sport). They say something like a home run. No. The answer is "the next play". Every play counts and you gotta play it like it is the pivotal play regardless of whether you just blew it or just triumphed. You focus on the next play. Triple zero is when you focus on anything else.

That's what I'm saying. I've heard what you're saying. What I'm saying is not just focus on it, or make it the most important play, but WIN the play. You don't want to look back at the end of the game and think "I could have ______'d that play and it could have made the difference (in a win or a better win)". It's not just being competitive; it's winning through the competition.
