ASU has decent defense. It will be a struggle.
Go Bears!

@scottski -- Congrats to Kate and her meteoric career path. First win as the Seahawks PBP broadcaster? Too bad it had to be at the hands of Jared Goff, Marvin Jones and the Detroit Lions.Scottski51 said:
Watched the game of MY alma mater, the Bulldogs, and they gladly accepted 8 turnovers... none of which resulted in touchdowns. Fresno St. is good, solid on both sides of the ball. ASU, with it's new coach has great players on defense, but were playing their 4th string QB after halftime. Offense was non-existent. Undoubtedly, they will change game plans and Won't be coughing up the ball endlessly as happend Sat nite, but a good defense and potent offense, as Cal appears to have, should win that game w/out much drama.
That was a top notch preview of a future playoff game.KoreAmBear said:@scottski -- Congrats to Kate and her meteoric career path. First win as the Seahawks PBP broadcaster? Too bad it had to be at the hands of Jared Goff, Marvin Jones and the Detroit Lions.Scottski51 said:

sure blame TV for fans desire for more and more essentially pro football, the consumers are ruining this, not the media, the media only gives the masses what they wantgolden sloth said:bear945 said:

Of course Fox probably wants that, as it makes the schools more reliant/dependent on TV money and they want as much power and control as they can obtain, regardless of the downstream impacts to the schools.

I wonder if the B1G defectors (USC/UCLA/Oregon/Washington) are going to find themselves playing 9am home games as well. It will be interesting to watch. Seems like Fox will push this more than ESPN.golden sloth said:Oakbear said:sure blame TV for fans desire for more and more essentially pro football, the consumers are ruining this, not the media, the media only gives the masses what they wantgolden sloth said:bear945 said:

There are two consumers, the TV viewer and the at-the-game fan. Fox is only working to maximize the TV viewer, to the detriment of the in-game fan.
Ideally, you would want the schools and TV network to be able to form a good faith partnership and find a healthy balance between the two consumer types, but fox does not want that. They want to maximize only the TV viewer consumer which hurts the at-the-game consumer. This hurts the school as attendance will shrink (as is happening across college football), which means less money and less investment, which means a worse product. So it's not the consumers, it's Fox catering to only a portion of the consumers, and not caring about damaging the rest of the sport.
Fox wants to give the viewers what they want, just as all the other media does, methinks you are after fox because they don't share your political beliefs ..golden sloth said:

the masses want semi pro football 24/7 and the media will do their best to give it to them
using the word "ideally" indicates you are very naive
I am impressed, you really believe that Fox is out to get Cal ... I doubt that Cal is even mentioned much in conversations as Cal football is pretty much irrelevant and has been for years (much to my sorrow)golden sloth said:
Fox has made a conscious effort to kill Cal football. They were a lead instigator in breaking up the Pac-12 and a dominant reason why the B1G refused to invite Cal.
Claiming they want 24/7 football because that is what the fans want is wrong, because Colorado - USC are playing in a time slot where 30+ other games can easily be played. There is no reason that Fox should force USC and Colorado to play at that time as they have plenty of other options.
And no, saying ideally in a business sense is not naive. The best partnerships are long-lasting mutually beneficial partnerships. Not one where one party tries to hurt the other, that is what Fox is trying to do here.
I agree that Fox is only using college football for short term gain.golden sloth said:Oakbear said:

people still go to live performance if the product is worthy (see taylor swift tour), but when Cal puts out a mediocre product backed by a sort of don't care admin led by an ineffectual AD we are and will not be relevanty and will have to suck hind teat until changes are made
if we had had the success of the southern branch and they had our lack of success things would have been very different, but as I used to lament with one of my girlfriends "the only problem with reality is that it is too real"

But, in the case of the USC-CU game, Fox has good reason to put the game in that time slot. Other than the 10:30 pm ET/7:30 pm PT time slot, 12 noon ET has the weakest competition and thus Fox is likely to get a larger audience for the game in that time slot than in any other.
Colorado wanted this. The Pac-12 TV contract requires Fox to get the home team's permission for a start time that is before noon local time. Colorado wants the TV exposure any time they can get it. Apparently they care more about that than tailgating.golden sloth said:BearSD said:I agree that Fox is only using college football for short term gain.golden sloth said:

And that decision hurts the school and the community by preventing the pre-game party and festivities, where the school can socialize with donors, and kids can play at the fun zones and build the next generation of fans.
Fox is maximizing their own self-interest while hurting their partner, which is my point.
If you're curious: Pac-12 TV selection policy states that opponents must agree to kickoffs prior to 11 am local. USC signed off on breakfast in Boulder. Credit the Trojans. https://t.co/QdpBdyK5v5

Thanks so much, KAB ! Yes, the Cal Grad daughter has certainly done well with the hard work and perserverance learned at University. She really enjoyed the FB preseason games and hopes to do more, tho she relishes her main job in Philly. We're hoping to get back there in the next couple months. It's really kind of you to remember her (and me!). Very much appreciated. Hope you and yours are well and thriving.
