That is very impressive, but very few schools have an alumni base like that. And by 'like that' I mean, both have the means and the desire.
Is this all just to the school or is it a combination of school + NIL, or just NIL?

This was all prearranged. This group of donors got together and were willing to put in the money to buy SMU's way into a Power 5 conference by donating money so that the school could offer to forego media payouts from the ACC for the first 9 years. So that works out 22 million a year over 9 years.
So all of that money can be considered break even or less in exchange for membership into a Power 5 conference.
We have the alumni wealth to come to the table with this kind of funding:

I think our NIL effort is on the right track and very well suited to the demographic of our alumni base. Always better to have more people give smaller amounts than a few people give larger amounts. This way you don't run into problems with some big donor wanting to call all the shots.

SMU money is no joke. i have a friend who goes there and he knows kids who will buy sportscars for a semester then give them to a friend so they can buy another sportscar the next semester. one of his friends told him on a night out to "please keep the bill under 30k, or 40k at most". it's insane wealth. and those are just the kids of the boosters. 200M is pocket change for those donors.

I guess a lot of their wealthy alums are old enough to remember their program's Pony Express glory years with Dickerson and co, and are eager to revive them now that they've finally returned to the big leagues.
SMU and Texas oil money is serious. Football is also more akin to a religious experience there than here.

It's also going to be a little trickier to solicit NIL donations given that the NIL donations aren't tax deductible. If the SMU donations were more for the Athletics Fund at large then they are likely tax deductible. $100M in 7 days is impressive, don't get me wrong, but it'd be a lot more impressive if it was all towards NIL too.evanluck said:

Look how easy it is for the Light the way campaign to tack on another $200M recently. That's where they put their money.
We do have some sports backers that have significant means in the tech community. Some are quietly donating and I know of one who helped NIL. Most don't trust giving money to Cal, and certainly won't do anything with knowlton around.

Well, we just raised $7B and have three months left until the Light the Way Campaign ends. There are plenty of people out there who have enough faith in our beloved University. If your wealthy alumni friends are concerned about the use of the funds, they can always place restrictions on its allocations and the University will be bound by those restrictions.

I have to admit seeing $100M being raised by SMU for football and thinking there have got be better ways as a society to spend that money. It's one thing if media companies want to spend the money because they think they will get a return on it but why would I do that as a donor unless football was really important to me? We might have better luck recruiting donors from all the professional athletes that see a benefit in maintaining athletics.

In the case of athletics, it's been well documented that prior to CALiber in football, the AD would take a donation for football and give it to women's soccer or wherever needed to make all 30 sports happy. Plus the chancellor siphons off 10% for her discretionary campus-wide fund. It's still the case in every sport but football and basketball that the Jimbo can take your money and redistribute it however he pleases.
That builds distrust. Especially when your AD is incompetent.
A hundred million could help pay for some hookers, crack cocaine, child support, and a brand new laptop.

He gave $5 million to a swim coach after he was told she was abusing the swimmers, then spent $2 million investigating her only after reports came out on the press. He gave $10 million to Mark Fox to drive our program to the worst finish in our history, worst in the country with the lowest scoring team in the country and he extended Justin Wilcox out to year 11 after losing seasons in years 4 and 5, with $30 million guaranteed.
Where do you think that money came from? Do you think it came from people that don't trust CAL?

hate red, ima probably the leading advocate/fundraiser for rescue animals in maricopa county with annual donations that exceed the cal nil fundraising for football & basketball combined (that's not on a knock on the cal nil fundraising, it's just a fact)
when rich people pledge dollars to various facilities they 100% understand they will need to hand me a check written (the money never touches me, ima not operating in any fiduciary capacity outside of my own personal donations) to their favorite charity within 48 hours & that i will meet them anywhere/anytime to make sure that happens
my pledge to collection ratio is around 98% (even death is not a legit excuse to the monster)
