Anyone with a more astute understanding of d-line play able to comment on Brett's performance this far? Not a lot of stats and I'm not sure how many snaps he's getting per game. Think it was about 17 in his first game.

That said, he might be drawing double teams and that might explain lack of stats but again - haven't watched him closely nor do I have perspective to judge his play.

But I do hope he goes Evan Weaver on the Huskies!

He's definitely had a few key plays that do not show up on the stat line.

The ones in the North Texas game I think were pointed out already.

Against Idaho, for example, the Carlton sack was a direct result of Johnson pushing his OL 5+ yards back into the backfield.

I believe he did fairly well against Auburn too. Interior DLs in this defense don't pick up a ton of status, I'm thinking.

During one of the broadcasts they mentioned he was on a pitch count early in the season. Therefore, he has been subbed out very liberally.

He looks like he is playing at a gear below full speed. I don't blame him. Next year is his year and he can play at the NFL level if he doesn't have a setback. Id rather see that for his sake.

Need also to consider the D system and his role in it. If he can occupy 2 OLs and disrupt a pulling guard, that may be a win for him.

I also agree with others that we cannot expect dominance at this point and with his pitch count. Let's enjoy how they play together and watch for him to have a bigger impact later in the season.

Might just be what I was seeing selectively but I see him leveraging alot straight up which would indicate that he is 2 gapping which makes sense given the Sirmon / Wilcox 2 scheme up front.
Unfortunately it doesn't lead to a ton of stats.
Essentially he and correia or Saunders are responsible for 2 gaps so as opposed to a single gap that happens with 4 up front and so are playing man control at the point of attack.

B+ if you compare him to quality DL across country.
A- / A if you compare him to Cal DL over the past 5+ years.

I would say the dline looks good so far, other than pressure on the QB is not consistent. It does seem run defense is better when Johnson is in to my amateur eye. I'm hoping he gets more snaps as Cal gets into the meat of its conference schedule.

I'll easily take that after missing two years due to injury.

Yes for sure! His snaps have increased over three games:
17, 31, and then 32 against Idaho.

He has been 1st string in each game. Paired with Ethan Saunders in games 1 and 2, and with Burrell in game 3.

Brett has been double teamed in all games and in some cases triple teamed with the TE coming in motion and wham blocking assisting the guard and tackles. Clearly they OC's are game planning him. That means the other DL needs to step up.
