Can we make this rivalry popular in the Bay area? The time is now.

There is an opportunity, but I do disagree with the assertion Oakland has the most passionate fans in America. I'm pretty sure every fanbase thinks they are the most passionate, it doesn't mean that they are.

Part of the reason they can't sustain a franchise is because they are 10 miles from baseball and basketball franchises and 40 from hockey and football.

The hard truth is that Oakland is the third largest city (by population) in the region and the pro franchises have migrated to the 1st and 2nd largest.

I think there is some opportunity for Cal to carve out a larger niche in the East Bay, but they have to start winning first.

So there's no opportunity

*used to have the most passionate fans in america*
You'll now see their headlights heading over altamont at 7pm from blue collar jobs that now only afford them a shared space in Manteca meaning they don't want to go to travel another 4 hours on the day off. Or they watch on tv from their new homes in oregon or Idaho.
The problem is one of gentrification. Reality check, Fart sniffing bougies who don't eat meat or dairy and ride a bike to work to afford 6 million dollar family homes are also more likely to be obtuse to football.
Sorry but not really. That's the reality of the Bay Area and the accelerated gentrification we're seeing.
We can't continue to make the argument that fans don't come because we suck. They don't come because they don't live here anymore.

Stanford, no way. You might as well root for Pepperdine

Cal needs winners with Leon Powes and Marshawn Lynches

Perhaps the powers that be know something about the east bay that we don't.

Cal needs to fill the vacuum created by the departure of pro franchises but it's challenging. Although, Cal is a state school, it's a highly selective and therefore, exclusive institution unlike other state schools where everyone has multiple family members or friends who attended.

This. Other public schools feel obtainable and are thus easy to root for. Cal is very selective and thus can feel like you're rooting for the bosses in the annual bosses-vs-workers softball game.

Not to mention several of my Cal friends dont want non-cal alums to cheer for Cal or wear Cal clothing.

Not sure I buy this. If you win and are exciting, the fans will be there. Duke Basketball has a ton of fans nationally despite being hard to get into.

Part of the reason we need to lean more into our sports identity as the state flagship: "The California Golden Bears"

Again, as a state flagship our sports teams should represent more than just our campus, which is why the move to "Cal Berkeley" is fundamentally wrong. We are not a directional school, we are not a satellite of a flagship state university, we are a state flagship.

I guarantee a lot of those people who filled the stadium during the Tedford years were not Cal grads.

Tom Hanks grew up in Oakland and went to Chabot, but….
