Doing pretty well. Up 27-3 at halftime vs Green Bay. One TD pass but also an interception on his first possession. Lotta help from the Detroit ground game and from the defense.

Cal Strong has lived in a lot of different places since he left Cal (all over the US, Europe, Egypt, Australia, and now New Zealand). But a Thursday night football game while he is in New Zealand is the absolute best. Not even close. Cal Strong wishes all football games (college and NFL) took place on Thursday night.

No 11PM, 2:30AM, or 4AM kickoff times like in Europe or Egypt, no having to decide to skip church on a Sunday for Cal like when he was in Australia. Just "work" from home on Friday afternoon, grab a coffee, and enjoy the game.

Cal Strong no usually watch the NFL. But the combination of a Cal QB and perfect kickoff time was too tempting to resist.

The only downside is having to hear the name "Musgrave" several times.

He is ia great Golden Bear who bleeds blue and gold.

(I can't believe our best season with him behind center was 8-5. It's a shame Dykes was a mediocre coach when he was at Cal.)

Never skip church for a ball game Cal Strong. That's what a recording device is for.

Wow, had no idea they had the NFL in the Outback. Crikey, I'm gonna have to fly down there to get some shrimp on the barbie.

We went 3-8, 4-7 and 7-3-1 with Steve Bartkowski

We went 6-5, 6-6 and 3-8 with Rich Campbell

Stanford went 5-5-1, 6-5, 4-7 and 5-6 with John Elway

We also went 1-9, 4-5-1 and 3-7 with Craig Morton. It's hard to believe he finished 7th in the Heisman voting when the team went 3-7.

All fair points, but Goff's time at Cal was still largely squandered. And Goff is a better QB than three out of four of those guys, at least.

Cal Strong taught at secular universities for awhile. But every time he administered an exam, he sensed a ton of prayers (even among his atheist students) before he hot the starting bell.

Speaking of:

Cole heads for Newport Harbor

LATimes: "Cole Leinart, a sophomore quarterback at Mater Dei and the son of Heisman Trophy winner Matt Leinart, has transferred to Newport Harbor.

He was the backup quarterback the last two seasons to Elijah Brown. His father enrolled him at Mater Dei to be with the coach who coached him, Bruce Rollinson. Rollinson retired as coach after last season."

People, including a certain poster I'm not going to argue with any more, do not understand the difference in the college game from then to now. With barely any schollie limits, top teams took all the good players. The era of 3 things can happen when you pass and 2 are bad. USC, OU, Nebraska, Michigan, OSU, Alabama, etc. barely passed at all. They just lined up behind a huge OL and ran over and over and over, mowing down their opponents. Cal and Stanford often had the best QB's and still lost. But then again so did a lot of other teams. Good teams had running backs for quarterbacks.

Even in the 80's I remember an old southern coach doing Color in a bowl game and he called play action a trick play.
