It's one of those situations where it was absolutely terrible at kickoff but grew more than I would've thought by like 1pm.JimSox said:
Attendance Saturday was indeed poor, but the photo in that story was a deceptive and inaccurate depiction. Made it look like just a handful of fans when there were well over 30 thousand, and a quite spirited lot at that.
There were definitely not "well over 30,000" fans in attendance last Saturday. The stadium was clearly well less than half full. I'd say 25,000 max is more like it.JimSox said:

34,353 official attendance. Is that an inflated number? I don't know,Golden One said:There were definitely not "well over 30,000" fans in attendance last Saturday. The stadium was clearly well less than half full. I'd say 25,000 max is more like it.JimSox said:

I assume that's paid attendance (e.g. tickets sold) and not the actual count of folks present.JimSox said:34,353 official attendance. Is that an inflated number? I'm not sure you could put a 10,000 seat football stadium where Edwards is.eastbayyoungbear said:
This is probably beating a dead horse already, but renovating Memorial instead of downsizing for a smaller stadium (preferably where Edwards is) was probably the wrong move.

deion ran off 70 scholly players that were presumably gonna graduate from the university of colorado
if this is the direction of college football, it's gonna be all over for most fans that are not interested in semi-pro football with disposable gladiators that got no academic intent in earning degrees
These "news" articles that just repost some trolls on Twitter are the absolute worst. None of this is news.StrawberryCanyon said:

The broadcasting money thing really blew up after the decision to repair Memorial was made. I am of the opinion that throwing good money after bad is not pragmatic. Eighty to one hundred million per (I know, my numbers previously pulled out of my … ) is just crazy. That pays for the Simpson High P. In two years. Mountain West, if they will have us. Too late now, but the ACC deal will strangle most programs at Berkeley.82gradDLSdad said:Shocky1 said:

This is the direction. We spent millions renovating Memorial. We spent millions for football coaches and buyouts. We should have planned to go the entire way or stayed like ivies. Put up or shut up (not directed at you personally). And I'm pretty conservative but mainly I'm a pragmatist.
And? So what? He knew what he wanted. He told them from the moment he got there that he was gonna do it. The portal was there.Shocky1 said:

There were many here for just that reason only a few years ago. I knew some. Nowadays, the money changes everything.philly1121 said:And? So what? He knew what he wanted. He told them from the moment he got there that he was gonna do it. The portal was there.Shocky1 said:

And "if" this is the direction? Where you been sir?
If we want to stay out of the headlines for supposed trolls (anyone who takes a picture of our stadium on game day or comments about our record is a troll), then perhaps things should change? The archaic notion in play here is your notion that these footballers are actually here for an academic degree.

Per Wikipedia, here are the attendance figures (I assume tickets sold, not butts in the seats, which is what we all notice) since the new CMS (Tedford's last year). Maybe season ticket sales were constant through the Dykes years but buyers gradually quit attending and finally many dropped their season tickets after 2016. In any case, Wilcox hasn't been able to win many fans back. I have friends who dropped their tickets this season after ~30 years.KoreAmBear said:In hindsight of course.eastbayyoungbear said:

We thought new CMS with Tedford ball would bring in recruiting classes like we almost had before Tosh left.
But yah, turns out:
1) we have massive debt from the remodel
2) we usually are not close to filling up CMS for most games (I'd say average is in the 30s since new CMS opened)
3) It didn't make the performance any better --- in fact our best recent teams were the early Tedford teams before the new CMS
