Can't answer for 72, but I will not be.

I have so little interest in this team, it might be lower than the ADs interest.

Not lower than the University's interest though.

But yeah, let's pretend the problem is the fans.

Attendance Saturday was indeed poor, but the photo in that story was a deceptive and inaccurate depiction. Made it look like just a handful of fans when there were well over 30 thousand, and a quite spirited lot at that.

It's one of those situations where it was absolutely terrible at kickoff but grew more than I would've thought by like 1pm.

There were definitely not "well over 30,000" fans in attendance last Saturday. The stadium was clearly well less than half full. I'd say 25,000 max is more like it.

34,353 official attendance. Is that an inflated number? I don't know,

I assume that's paid attendance (e.g. tickets sold) and not the actual count of folks present.

This is probably beating a dead horse already, but renovating Memorial instead of downsizing for a smaller stadium (preferably where Edwards is) was probably the wrong move.

I'm not sure you could put a 10,000 seat football stadium where Edwards is.

Clicks are more important than actual news. MSN probably has daily articles featuring Kansas grads that work at the MacDonald's drive thru.

This isn't beating a dead horse, it's just a bad idea. This would have locked us out of a major conference in this most recent, and any future alignments. The massive debt is what is forcing us to prioritize revenue sports and likely saved the program.

Man, I'm way less of a sports fan than I used to be but this article makes me a bit envious of Colorado. Deion reminds me a bit of Trump only with the talent and the genuiness to back it up. Cal needs to luck out with a Chancellor and/or an AD and/or with a coach like this. Mark Madsen may be a good start. Wilcox, while nice and competent, is not this guy.

deion ran off 70 scholly players that were presumably gonna graduate from the university of colorado

if this is the direction of college football, it's gonna be all over for most fans that are not interested in semi-pro football with disposable gladiators that got no academic intent in earning degrees

In hindsight of course.

We thought new CMS with Tedford ball would bring in recruiting classes like we almost had before Tosh left.

But yah, turns out:

1) we have massive debt from the remodel
2) we usually are not close to filling up CMS for most games (I'd say average is in the 30s since new CMS opened)
3) It didn't make the performance any better --- in fact our best recent teams were the early Tedford teams before the new CMS

This is the direction. We spent millions renovating Memorial. We spent millions for football coaches and buyouts. We should have planned to go the entire way or stayed like ivies. Put up or shut up (not directed at you personally). And I'm pretty conservative but mainly I'm a pragmatist.

And yet still somehow even that downsized crowd still managed to rouse itself down the stretch and help force the late turnover that turned the game.

Nearly 70 years in from the time the University brass and the homeowners above the stadium and the activists that see football as fascist started trying to kill this thing called Cal football, somehow, we're still here and managing to pull stuff like that.

We've survived more knockouts and beat downs than Rocky. That's why they have to keep coming at us- because somehow we keep standing back up when the whole thing is clearly hopeless.

And yes, I'll be there Saturday night +1. Don't ever count a true Cal fan out just because it makes no sense to keep believing things can change. We've seen them change too many times before not to at least try.

"if this is the direction of college football, it's gonna be all over for most fans that are not interested in semi-pro football with disposable gladiators that got no academic intent in earning degrees"

unfortunately, there are few fans that care ... I happen to be one that has lost (losing more each day) in the college game

it used to be that the players were paid, but less obvious than now, but still, they mostly stayed where they were recruiting, now it is open season and players have lost their loyalty and fans like me will drift away, but most football fans don't give a rats patootie about this and TV will continue to give them games, not quite 24/7 but getting there

One thing that is not out there yet (am curious to see if it will ever be) is how much the players get in NIL ..

A big question in my mind is whether NIL money is spent wisely, but who knows, there are no figures out there.. for example, how much does Cal have to spend in NIL vs say CO who added so many players??

when it comes down to who can pay the most, I lose interest

the pros with the draft have at least made an effort to keep the teams more evenly balanced, but good management wins out if you review results.. Cal does not have good management

The broadcasting money thing really blew up after the decision to repair Memorial was made. I am of the opinion that throwing good money after bad is not pragmatic. Eighty to one hundred million per (I know, my numbers previously pulled out of my … ) is just crazy. That pays for the Simpson High P. In two years. Mountain West, if they will have us. Too late now, but the ACC deal will strangle most programs at Berkeley.

And? So what? He knew what he wanted. He told them from the moment he got there that he was gonna do it. The portal was there.

And "if" this is the direction? Where you been sir?

If we want to stay out of the headlines for supposed trolls (anyone who takes a picture of our stadium on game day or comments about our record is a troll), then perhaps things should change? The archaic notion in play here is your notion that these footballers are actually here for an academic degree.

There were many here for just that reason only a few years ago. I knew some. Nowadays, the money changes everything.

Per Wikipedia, here are the attendance figures (I assume tickets sold, not butts in the seats, which is what we all notice) since the new CMS (Tedford's last year). Maybe season ticket sales were constant through the Dykes years but buyers gradually quit attending and finally many dropped their season tickets after 2016. In any case, Wilcox hasn't been able to win many fans back. I have friends who dropped their tickets this season after ~30 years.

2012: ~60k
2013: ~49k
2014: ~49k
2015: ~49k
2016: ~47k
2017: ~36.5k
2018: ~43k
2019: ~42.4k
2022: ~38.5k

If you look back further, recent attendance isn't too different from the 1960s-early 1970s. Of course, we weren't paying the HC millions of $$.
