My buddy went on a fishing trip to Alaska 3 weeks ago and texted me these pictures. When I expressed my concern about those bears he said they were too busy gorging themselves on salmon to be concerned about humans. My response: "Famous last words."

Thanks for video link. When I asked my friend if they were grizzly bears, he texted:

" Same species. ….bears that live near coast called brown bears; those that live inland called grizzlies."

thanks alot. maany years ago we experienced similar views after winning the lottery to fly-in/tent at McNeil River Falls for several days, guided daily by the awesome Larry Aumiller. recommended picture book..

the only nervous moment was when bawling cubs, somehow separated across the river, drew mamabear towards rubberneckers stuck in between. "stand still and look tall" larry urged.

Moose injure & kill more people in Alaska than brown bear every year, or so I've heard. They don't see well, so whenever they sense a threat, they run toward it and trample on it.

So stay away from the moose! And don't hit any on the highway at night! Or drive a Volvo if you do!

When you saw Larry putting his tennis shoes on you said, "Larry, what are you doing, you can't outrun that bear because it can hit speeds of 35 MPH."

Larry replied: "The way I see it, I only have to outrun you and the Mrs."

We no longer have brown bears in California. We do have a large population of black bears, most of which are brown.

looking back, waaay back, those were the best days of our life. except when (maybe) me and my much better half got hitched while finishing up at Cal in the early 70s.

Years ago, while driving from South Lake Tahoe to Tahoe City, I witnessed a dozen or more people encircling a bear standing near the side of Hwy 89... The diameter of the circle was perhaps 20' or so. I drove past... Shaking my head, mumbling about the clueless idiots, and hoping the bear didn't feel threatened or needing to make a sudden departure...
