CAL OR CALIFORNIA

When referring to football or any Cal Athletics team it is always "California" or "Cal", when referring to the University or academics it is "UC Berkeley". "Cal- Berkeley" is inaccurate and should not be used).

Agree, It should be "California" in any official written release, on the scoreboards, on the jerseys and spoken as much as possible, "Cal" should be clearly a nickname. Helmet is OK, I like it, though a bear claw or just a Golden Bear would be great too.

To my Mom that graduated in 1942 it was always Cal. To Oakland Catholic high school boys who attended in the early 70's it was UC Berkeley because we needed that Berkeley in there to terrorize the Greatest Generation (I think the Piedmont boys from my era went with Cal).

Pick 2. 3 is too many for the average fan to keep track of. 3 is also certainly too many names to put on a uniform.

I know it's not one of the branding choices but I like the name of the place where the stadium is located: Berkeley California.

The fact that we are 150 years in and we are still discussing this is not a good sign. Honestly, with names the only thing that matters is that they shouldn't change. If we had 150 years of the same name everyone would know it. I think the fact that we've now (last 50 years) thrown around alternate names to appease folks is obviously a problem. If Cal is the longest known name, use it. If folks in some areas use other names, big deal. Stick with Cal wherever you can. None of the other names will matter if we win.

USC isn't even a name. It's three letters. Nobody is debating that it is a ****ty name. Because they win.

In the Vikings/Chiefs game, Bynum made a nice play, and the announcer referenced that he was in his X year "out of Cal Berkeley", which I don't recall ever hearing before. NFL announcers would always say out of Cal or California. So it appears the awful rebranding is a done deal. Another gift from this administration...

I haven't seen Sandy's name here in a while and I've been surprised in that she got a brief mention in the LA Times a couple of months ago. A line buried in a long USC article said she had been hired as a consultant to the athletic department. This was after their athletic director Bohn had retired and before their change to the BIG 10 was announced.
