OK, this is ANOTHER sprinkler mention. This HAS to stop!

What it is it with work on sprinkler systems? Don't you have more interesting things to work on? I can offer my services and teach y'all some bicycle maintenance so you'll be wrenching on those sweet $12k Colnagos and Yetis instead of digging in the dirt!

And maybe Diablo and others can teach us some Porsche maintenance tricks, so the rest of you can get greasy working on your valves, ceramic brakes and double-wishbone suspension bits!

Let's up our "Saturday maintenance" game, shall we?

My problem is that I have a dozen irrigation valves (no sprinklers, all drip) on two different timers and six road bikes (Italvega, Trek, Centurion/Cinelli, Tommaso, Litespeed, Zunow) to maintain. I did make time to rebuild a Specialized Allez (zero-dollar yard sale find) last winter, though.
You've got a TOMMASO??? Well that's pretty cool... and coincidental. The Cal team bikes were Tommasos in '89 and I still have mine in great shape. Might yours be similar? Or from The Bike Shop @ Cal Adventures?

Yes, more bikes means more maintenance! It can be a challenge to keep up with them all! First-world problems, for sure.

As soon as my wife feels comfortable with me riding again (more seizure fallout) I'm with you on the bike maintenance. I don't remember having to do that much though. Amazing machines.
Two friends recently landed in the ICU, thanks to bad drivers. Both escaped with their lives, but it wasn't certain. Recovery was quick thanks to being in great shape bicycle riding. Happy to report that one, a former Cal Cycling teammate, is back on the bike and riding. Not sure about the other.

If riding the road, I'm using front and rear blinking lights 24/7. And a rear-view mirror. Need a front & rear helmet cam to add to the mix.

Been almost a life-long road rider, but I tell ya, with today's drivers I'm not sure it's worth it. I totally understand folks kissing road riding goodbye. And to be honest, if I HAD to choose just ONE discipline on a bicycle, it would be mountain biking. And with today's mountain bikes, that decision is even more solid. (Can't wait to get back to Moab for trip #15!)

Be careful out there!

PS I guess I missed the Dykes-era "sprinkler system maintenance" theme. Ha, ha!

Utah just changed the game a bit. Smart move.
Other schools are going to have to decide how to move forward, this is a cheap way stretch NIL money for a perk that recruits will be eyeing.

Every football scholarship athlete for the Utes just received a brand new leased Dodge Ram 1500s courtesy of a Utah NIL group.

Roughly about $800/month to lease, so that's about $850,0000 to lease a vehicle for each player. Not sure how much the insurance payment is on that.

video is going viral on social media.
it's interesting how they did it, 6 month leases contingent on players eligibility continuing.

Utah NIL collective

Yeah, but the Ram truck will be rusted out by their senior year, shoulda' gone with Ford.
Brilliant idea, otherwise, but doesn't have to be a vehicle.
"Just win, baby."

Super cool "smart move" for those living in the 21st century suicide machine (that would be 80+% of the population of the western world, so all good).

For me, even FCS is probably stinking like a rotten fish if I sniff hard enough. If I can be bothered, maybe it's NAIA level if I have an extra couple of bucks in my pocket. Wouldn't contribute a dime to this death cult to save my life.

This keeps me sane. I can't ride or drive because I collapsed without warning into a barbeque. Seizures. I can appeal with neurologist approval to get my license back. Don't need anything like that for the bike. But my wife watched me collapse and now can't bring herself to let me do anything. I get it. She thought I had died. And since they haven't found anything there is no assurance it won't happen again. So I tell myself that at least I don't have to deal with texting drivers. I think I may ride again though. At least I can't kill anyone else unlike driving.

This is just silly.
this is reality.

you think you can offer players bus passes or mopeds?
the game is no longer about paying outrageous sums to coaches, its about paying the players.
Nope. This is wrong. It is paying BOTH. Now pool the revenues that pay coaches. Allow NIL donations to move you up the season tix priority list (this is happening hit and miss in a few places).

And it is also, for a school like cal, unsustainable. It is a PAIN IN THE ASS to raise ongoing yearly non-tax deductible donations for "operating" expenses. Hat tip to seb but donor fatigue is going to be real at the point that doners yearly are writting 7 figure checks.

and, yet, this is reality.

I have to say, this is actually morally superior to the NCAA scam that was going on for decades, hustling athletes and paying coaches money that should have been going to athletes. There is actually a movie that was released about this very thing recently.

and, yes, this is completely unsustainable.
the economic model is all wrong, because it was not geared toward being a fully functioning business that pays those that it depends on, the athletes. it was geared toward funneling money to coaches and the athletic institution.

athletics needs to be spun off from academia, and fully privatized. have it run like a proper business.
have them pay the University for the right to wear the laundry, and receive some sort of institutional support in the form of all athletes being given guaranteed 4 years of education to be completed concurrently or perhaps even at some later time.

the only way back from this eventuality is if the big donors start corralling congress (huge task given the absolute **** show that it is) to pass legislation putting the breaks on some of this. and if you think about it, the sell wouldnt be hard. its not a highly controversial subject, anybody in congress can get behind it and use it to sell themselves to the public for their next election cycle.

first congressman to get behind it get to look like they are preserving Americana...saving a cherished American tradition. I don't think any Rep or Senator would stand against it so long as athletes get something out of it and college football doesn't implode into the double headed super conference juggernaut.

sidenote: when I said it was a smart move for Utah to do this, its because they took a step forward that puts it to all the teams and creates additional distance between the elites of the college football business, and everyone else. ultimately, its a painful move for 90% of teams in college football.

My Tommaso is that vintage. I bought the frame/fork/headset on CL for $200 15 years ago. Blue/White fade with a few chips and some touchup. Columbus SLX. The components are an eclectic mix. The seller kept handing me more stuff: wheelset with Campy NR hubs, a nice stem, some 1st gen Look pedals. I suspected he was a lunatic when I saw he had not one but two Alfa Romeos on blocks in his driveway. They're probably still there.

As a kid, I was on the Berkeley Jr Traffic Patrol and stood in front of Velo Sport so saw all those beautiful bikes in the window. Now I own some. My cycling buddies all ride carbon frames - they just don't get it.

I rode aluminum and then carbon frames until very recently getting a steel Soma Fog Cutter, which I'm loving. When I was in the Bay Area to take it on the obligatory Mt. Diablo ride I got a couple weird looks and blank stares. Steel is more alien than real around there.

A bike for every FB player is something I can get behind!

I rode an Austro Daimler steel racing bike across the country, a Cannondale aluminum touring bike on two other two week trips. They felt the same: hard work.

Austro Daimler has made a comeback! Who knew?
As has, unfortunately, Tommaso. I was walking on Lakeshore when I saw one locked up to a pole. Tommaso is now a consumer-direct brand, built in Asia (no surprise), and not a THING like its predecessor.

Oh well, times change.

What did you think of Tomassinis? Not sure of the spelling. My friend got one from Irio Tomassini himself in Italy and built it up with all Campy parts (of course). It was light, I'll say that. I only rode it on rollers when my bike was being fixed.

This is BIP City. Cars and bikes will get snatched. and on a bike, they may snatch your life, too. saw video of some clowns driving around in a stolen Kia who would drive up on cyclists near Ashby Bart and slam them with the car door.

Its a shame, a nice bike will carry you far. Had a 712 Miyata with the red and yellow color scheme. The Japanese Miyata bikes are high quality stuff. LIghter than anything Ive seen outside of pro bikes in the last 10 years

anyway, bikes run the danger of dumb drivers, had some close calls and left a foot size dent in a few cars that almost killed me. so, maybe the best option would be to give the football players an Uber/Lyft account as long as they remain eligible.

Tommasinis have always been at the high end of the spectrum. Known for their creative tubing choices, excellent lugwork and amazing paint jobs, they're a thing of wonder. Definitely a keeper!

I have very fond memories of donning the Cal Cycling kit and spending some time on Sproul riding the rollers during Sport Club week. Always a fun & unique way to recruit new riders.

Thanks for those two mentions!

Are the players doing commercials or meet and greets with their vehicles? Cuz otherwise I don't see the NIL in this, I just see pay for play.
