It's too bad he doesn't post that much on the football boards. We're missing out on 5 page essays on the intricacies of Andy smith's wishbone offense
I appreciate SFCity's posts because he generally adds a wealth of knowledge about Cal sports that's not easily found elsewhere. He has seen more Cal games (especially basketball) than just about anyone else. He's willing to share his knowledge and teach us younger folks about eras we didn't get to witness. For that, I'm truly grateful.
so is he going to advocate for the hoop to team to stop wearing white, too? or should the shoes match the uniforms? only time could bring that kind of wisdom.

Why don't you ask him directly? I'm sure he doesn't need me to speak for him.

That's a good point. I do like the white basketball uniforms for home games. Always have.
There certainly were great football teams who wore white uniforms. The Cleveland Browns in the days of Jim Brown and Ernie Davis.
With all the design and all the color combinations that go into sports wear these days, all-white uniforms seem out of place somehow in football.

Well, thanks. You are too kind, you and all who have put up with my long posts. Believe me, I'd like to shorten them, and I am trying. It is just that I am a storyteller, I guess, and now I have a lot of years and memories. I've developed a habit not easily kicked.

Well...I don't recall any Cal football teams before or since that accomplished what Andy Smith did. We should only be so lucky now...
Thanks. My father saw Smith's teams, but felt the 1937 Thunder team was the best Cal team he ever saw. Undefeated, with only one 0-0 tie in the rain and mud vs the Huskies to mar the record. Beat Alabama in the Rose Bowl. Was national champion in some polls. A lot of All-Americans on that team, and some of the ones who did not make AA for 1937, made AA the following year. My father said you had to get to Memorial early for games, because if you missed the first half, Cal was so far ahead, you would not see any of the starters in the 2nd half. The quarterback would line up call the play, and then announce something to the defense like, "Left tackle, this play is coming right over you", and they did just that. They did it all with a mediocre coach, Stub Allison. In the Rose Bowl, near the end of the game, Cal was 4th and goal, and needed to score to cinch the win. Allison sent in a play. The players sent it back, and ran their own play for Bottari, who scored, and Cal won. My dad never let me forget that he had seen Cal's greatest team, and I hadn't. He did take me and my mom to see Cal's Rose Bowl in 1960, which was a disappointing loss. The other great Cal teams I saw were Pappy's '48, '49, and '50 teams who all lost in the Rose Bowl. I feel blessed to have seen what I did, one Rose Bowl, and I feel the pain of all Cal fans here who have not seen Cal in at least one Rose Bowl.
You know that every team is required to have a white jersey, right?
exactly, in the vast majorit of college football games, unless the home team opts for white, the road team wears white jerseys. The issue here would be the pants and helmets. Didn't like it a few years back when we wore white helments, it is just not Cal. And at home I cringe when we wear the white pants with the blue jerseys, does not look like Cal. We could get away with the white pants at home ONLY with a gold jersey and blue helmet. There, I've covered my preferences!

White helmets are bad no matter what. I also don't care for white pants at home; they tend to look bad with either the blue or gold jerseys.
Personally, I don't like the all white, but they're acceptable. As long as they're not further degraded by white helmets. White helmets should never be a part of a Cal kit.
White uniforms are for tennis, and they went out of style with wooden racquets, long ago.
Maybe OK for cricket, but not football.
the football is in a dumpster and has been for years .. and will continue as long as JW is in charge
and people worry about the color of the uniforms LOL
quite frankly they could wear pink (even tho a shade of red) if they won ten or more games a year until I finally meet the great scorekeeper
Now that the sunshine pumpers finally join the rest of us in being cynical about the direction of the program, the only things we have left to argue over is the color of the unis, the songs that the band plays, and whether it's ethical to leave peanut shells in the stands.

Gerald Colvin (GERBEAR) on W4C is another Bear I treasure. He was a Cal cheerleader the last time we went to the Rose Bowl.
