I don't think that Cal brings the whole band to the UCLA game anymore due to being Thanksgiving weekend. Am I correct?

That is correct. Cal Band went to the Oregon game this year and I guess they get one trip a year as a full band

I do believe there will be a "straw hat band", but as good as the straw hatters are, at a football game it's just not the same.

What four bandsmen started in 1948/49 has now out lasted the PAC. It all started at the California State Fair summer 1948..The Straw Hat Band is 75 years old this year..... few people know that. Pretty sure the band members don't know that.... likely neither does the band director, athletic director or the chancellor. Quite discouraging, bordering appalling.
I'll go out on a limb and say more people know of the SHB than know about California Memorial Stadium.
Long live the Straw Hat Band!

So, whatever happened to the "Cal Band Great!" cheer from the student section bas the band comes off the field after their pre-game performances?

Additionally, at least in the mid-1970s, the students would chant "Tuba! Tuba!" as the tubas pranced to form the script Cal.

Hey doc. Here's a quick story for you: I was walking out of Memorial after the Cal Football showcase in April. I was with my kid and he was in his SHB getup. (you and I exchanged messages on FB last night. I think you know who I am).
Anyway, we were just outside Memorial, and an older gentleman pulls us aside and says "i have to tell you, the Cal Straw Hat band is my favorite thing in the whole world. I would know. I used to be at Notre Dame, and as grand as their band is, the Straw Hat Band is better, has more energy and has the most fun"
Turns out the guy was former Cal Mens basketball coach Dick Kuchen. Great guy. talked to us for 10 mins.

Didnt we have a 75th anniversary celebration on alumni Day against Idaho?

We also celebrated the first women in the band with them standing front and center.

Regardless, these little history posts are a great reminder why this all matters. It's generations of building and maintaining tradition. Always nice to see someone knowledgeable share.

The Tuba Tuba chant was replaced for me by singing the song at some point. It always struck me as goofy to chant "tuba" when we have some top tier songs... But if it's fun it's fun. As a kid, before I learned the songs had words, I thought it was fun and would do it. It makes me sad because my dad would do it, but my sister and I sang the songs during pregame.

The can Band Great must have just gone out of favor? I remember it from pre pandemic clearly.

I also gave a Cal Band Great at the big game to a guy just trying to go to the bathroom. It was the most annoyed "woooo" I have ever forced on someone. Point is, they know the call and response, so it's not dead, at least.

I loved the "too-bah, too-bah!" chant. I would occasionally get it on campus on my way to class. Made my day.

I recall at least once or twice at the Big Game rally they handed out little folded flyers with the lyrics to the most popular Cal fight songs - it seemed to promote more folks at least trying to sing at the next game - particularly for Fight for California. The fact that these songs were incredibly uncool in the 1970s was what made them fun to sing.

I remember gold paper that folded to wallet size. I believe they were printed/distributed by the Cal Alumni Association.

I remember when they handed out lyrics. It contributed to one of my proudest Cal Fan moments. Beloved Nephew and I worked on learning most of the songs. One Big Game week in the 90's we went to the old Washington Square Bar and Grill to see the band play. They jumped up on the bar and played Stanfurd Jonah. Watching them play I sang along with them at the top of my lungs. Afterwards, some band members said they were impressed as it's not a song that they played much outside of Big Game week. I was so proud....

The Alumni Assoc did that for decades. I learned lots of the words from one of those little yellow fold pits my mom had from the 1940s or 50s. Only reason I knows there's actually words to Palms of Victory!

During the Tedford years, they sold "Game Day" shirts at reduced prices. One year, the lyrics to "Fight for California" were printed on the back, which a brilliant idea that permitted fans to read the lyrics (and, if they wished, sing along as the band played.
