Yikes
Was honestly underwhelmed with his yac ability but his ability to just come down with the ball in contested situations and not fumble punts was unequaled.
Fortunately we are very deep at receiver

Not too much of a surprise, best of luck to him! I imagine he wants to go to an offense where he can get his stats up.

I don't think it's a huge loss other than just losing the experience of the WR room.

Can't say this is a surprise, the writing was on the wall even before the disastrous showing in the bowl game. I wish him the best and I hope that our WR room takes the next step forward regardless. We have a lot of speed coming in and it's clear that was a point of emphasis in receiver recruiting this year

It's never a good bet to rely on freshman to make meaningful contributions. Count me in as very concerned about our WR crew. Best returner is walk-on although very solid but not a star.

No separation and no proven player. Hope the guys that came in last year are better than advertised.

Can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. If not, I can't say I agree with this. We are not deep at all in the WR room. It's basically just Grizzell right now and he hasn't proven he can be WR1 and take on the opposing CB1. There are a number of guys that could end up being solid, but it's a big question mark. The best hopes after Grizzell in my view are Maven Anderson (assuming he stays) and Mason Starling if he recovers from injury. The ND transfer goes to the top of the list if he comes. And I assume we will hit the portal hard for this position in the spring. But it's a really shallow room right now when it comes to proven production.

When Mendoza became the Qb, Hunter was no longer targeted. Mendoza wanted to throw to his buddy and roomate.

Or, because Hunter was the biggest weapon outside of Ott, a lot of the defense's focus was on him leaving Grizz more open.

After Mendoza became the QB, Hunter caught 35 passes to Grizzell's 27. He just didn't make as many big plays. Hard to say that is because of favoritism by the QB.

WR Mason Mangum runs track and is one of the fastest player, yet in his four years at Cal, I don't believe he has any receptions. Anyone knows the inside scoop on Mangum?

I think both things can be true, Hunter is the best WR on the roster but the position group was disappointing this year.

The hope is given the opportunity the younger WR can replicate Hunter's success (or Cal portals in better WRs) and the loss isn't massive.

But rather keep him of course!

Somewhat sarcastic but in reality I'm not as worried as I'd be if Mendoza weren't qb and it was Finley or sjv

Yeah, we have returning players on the depth chart, but to be actually deep at the position, we would need to have returning production. We do not. For the guys who have been in college football for more than two years and have still not produced, I have little expectation for them anymore, though I never lose hope. Maybe a guy like Nyziah Hunter can make plays for us, now that he has had a season to get used to playing at this level.

We need to get some athletes out there who can reintroduce fear in the hearts of the opposition. To this point, the faster guys in the room haven't been able to get open, catch the ball and do damage, so it doesn't really matter how fast they are.

This is just false. Hunter and JMike were the best 1-2 Cal receivers since Keenan and Marvin. Mavin Anderson was also very good last year and hope he returns to form. Hunter almost had 1k yards in an injury shortened season last year. If they had Goff throwing to them and an OC who wasn't stuck in 2001 they would've had even gaudier stats. OL and TE have been worse units over Wilcox's tenure.

ok, i will give you that OL, TE and WR are all weak positions. Hard to rank 1a, 1b and 1c. when they all have been terrible. Does that make u feel better?

WR is one of our weakest position and just got weaker. You just cited JMike who is not even on our team, who disappeare on UCLA this year except for 2 games.

Let's be real. Jermiah and JMike are neither of the talent of Marvin and Keenan, who both had 10+ year careers in the NFL and one is on track for the hall of fame. Both of them got insane separation. I also think Bryce Treggs, Kenny Lawler and Chris Harper were very productive WRs. We haven't had anyone as good as any of those guys since then. Like i said, many, many years

In 2016, Chad Hansen and Demitris Robertson combined for 142 catches, 2,016 yards and 18 TDs (with Hansen missing two games). The receiving crew in 2015 was deeper, with the catches spread out more but combined for over 300 catches for over 4,000 yards and 40 TDs.

Comparing before Mendoza and after

Hunter 27-35
Drizzell 12-27
Endries 8-27
Ott 8-16

Huge increases in the last three.

Part of Mendoza's success was his accuracy throwing quick slants to Drizzell and Endries and throwing swing passes to Ott all with good YAC. He was not often throwing deep. I don't know if Hunter was targeted less or Mendoza just did not complete those throws with the accuracy he has on other plays.

The quick passing game mitigated our pass blocking issues, which is why I thought the Texas Tech game looked so different from earlier games and different from Spav in 2016. Too much of Mendoza standing in the pocket too long making reads with the defense blitzing. He looked like Plummer last year in Musgrave's "pro" offense. However, the insiders now tell us Bloesch has been the play caller for all of Fernando's games, or at least all of his wins.

He wasn't featured in this offense.

That said, he also underwhelmed when given the opportunity.

Would have been great to keep him, but I don't think he is going to go star somewhere else. Solid player. Wish him luck.

Agree, I don't quite understand the decision. He was clearly our #1 WR and slated to continue as such, odd to opt out when you're a top dog unless some NIL came $niffing around and he is short term $ minded.

What's the downside of taking more NIL money, and possibly playing on a team that might do better than Cal next year, and/or have, at least on paper, a better QB?
