Do we have a count on scholarships for Cal FB team?
There will be more players retiring, transfering out as well as in and players who eschew scholarships given NIL can cover their costs so it's a highly fluid number
Makes it sound as though the head coach is given, now, two recruiting incentives tools to work with, juggle:
1. University coffer offered scholarships (tuition and housing).
2. Privately fundraised NIL slush fund.
Is that how it works ?
What about players who sign a TV/print commercial directly with an advertiser? Double or Triple dipping? Does a prior offering get removed, reallocated?
It's such a strange new world, I don't get it. A post directly above this one mentions cutting a non performing player in the juggling process.
I suppose this is how it works in the real world, but it seems a far fetched from the idea of college athletics as a maturing agent for young men and women.
Human development be damned. That's more about wins and losses, dollars and cents. I suppose such pressures, and opportunities, can indeed hone and focus the subject. But those who struggle to keep up from the starter's gun can quickly be culled. And that's too bad for them.
Yesterday I spent time listening to Sebastian Junger speak of Tribe and the sense of 'all for one and one for all' in military platoons. He discusses how units that are so tightly bonded that one man should jump on a grenade to save other unrelated men around him can often easily defeat a larger force of self-preservation focused individuals.
Didn't think I would be translating that to college football roster formation tactics today.
Community Focused Culture-building tactics.
