I thought the Costco hot dog/drink combo is $1.50. If they ever raise it to $1.99, there will be riots.

They should do it now before the protestors regroup.

La Val's closed?!? I was just there in November...

I think @cal83dls79 was referring to the old La Val's on Durant, in that same complex that used to have a Tower Records. I think the southside La Val's close in the late-90's/early-00's. Pretty sure northside La Val's is going strong, as their website is active and accepting orders.

I don't recall a "Cheshire Cat" in Berkeley, however. And I'm old having graduated in the early nineties.

What I'd give to be as "old" as you (I got maybe a dozen years on you)...

Cheshire Cat was disgusting, maybe in a good way, depending on your POV... it was right near N, side LaVal's, maybe in the same alcove. On Thursday's, they had 99 cent pitchers of PBR and the pitchers were pretty big, at that. I don't know anyone that ever went there except Thursdays. The men's room was dark... and you were glad it was, the floor was all sticky. You had to decide if washing your hands after you peed would improve your hygiene situation, or make it worse. Probably the latter, as the sink was only semi-functional and there were no paper towels.

No surprise that Cheshire Cat didn't last until the '90s.
I literally saw dudes pissing in that sink when there was a line up at the urinals

For my 40th birthday (a long time ago), my wife bought tickets for the Concord Jazz Festival, Tony Bennett headlining. We got to the Concord Pavillion a bit late. We each went to our respective restrooms first and we were rushing. I walk into the men's room and no one is in there. I see a familiar sight. A 30 foot long stainless steel piss trough like the ones at CMS on the east side of the stadium in those green wood shacks.
I take a leak, take a 2 second scan for the sinks to wash my hands, seeing none, which seemed weird, I walk out. Shortly after exiting an older man comes from behind me, puts his arm around my shoulder and says, "I hate to break the news to you but you just pissed in the sink." He was giggling like a school girl.
I went back in the restroom and turned hard right and saw the porcelain urinals. I was mortified….but that was the first time I had seen a handwashing trough. To this day, never saw another.

*Didn't Raider fans perfect the art of peeing in sinks at the Coliseum in the late 60's and early 70's.

It seems that Top Dog might make a comeback once construction is done on that site.

In general these large scale private developments of student housing with ground level retail are fantastic for Cal and will only make the Downtown area more lively, but I cannot see how this particular tower is not going to obstruct some of the views of the Golden Gate from campus.

The Downtown area is pretty lively now…especially in the early afternoon.

Hello. Is there any way I can contact the owners of Top Dog? If it's true that they are shutting down the Durant location, my business partners and I would like to buy the property, tear it down and use it to expand La Burrita into a true dining destination. We would also build housing above it.
Actually, the opposite would be better. Buy out La Burrita and expand Top Dog. This way, on football days everyone can still get their Top Dog's right off the grill instead of being pre wrapped.

As much as I enjoyed my Top Dog's offerings, La Burrita's cheesesteak burrito was a revelation! I'd hate for kids to miss out on that.
