Mike is one of the outstanding people I have met at Cal. A true leader, determined competitor, great guy, awesome housemate, fun... I realize, like every Old Blue, our school days fade with ever increasing acceleration into the recesses of history, but Mike is one for the books.

A quick story about how Mike and I met and then became housemates. It was early Summer of 1990... I was the doorman at Raleigh's (a GREAT job!). Mike had not yet assumed the starting role for Cal (he would that summer) and was not yet 21... so one night he wants to come into Raleigh's, showed me his ID, except one little problem, it was Troy Taylor's info. Back in the day (I'm not sure this can still be done), if you had your driver's license you could let a younger friend use your information to go get a California Identification card. Obviously Troy and Mike were friends... I told Mike, "This isn't you" and he kept saying "that's me" about his photo and I said back, laughing, "But I'm friends with Troy Taylor and you're not Troy Taylor." Long story short, Mike didn't get in that night, but as we had mutual friends, he did eventually that Summer... that fall we had Classics 180 with Prof Miller together and became friends. Mike had to present to the class on what makes a "hero" and he used Joe Roth as his topic. As the semester went on, we became better friends and so when he and Sug (and Jerrott Willard, and Tim Manning) needed a housemate they asked me to join. It was a great time in life! Mike and I still laugh about the ID thing to this day.

So, to one of the truest, greatest Golden Bears, to the captain that took us to our highest final season ranking in the last 80 years, to our last New Years Day bowl win since 1938, and maybe his greatest achievement - putting up with me as a housemate... HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKE!!!

Happy birthday to Mike!
He was a great representative as a player and commentator. Being at Cal at that same time, I always knew we had a chance with him behind center.

Hilarious that you'd throw a Copper Bowl pic up of him running for his life. What a crappy game that was. But then again, a win is a win.

Agreed that he's a great golden bear. Probably my favorite if I had to name one.

Memories are funny... I don't remember it being a crappy game... I was just so excited we were in a bowl... and Tucson was pretty fun for New Year's Eve, except I think back then their last call was 12:30... I remember we were out after the game at some bar, doing shots, having fun... and while on the dancefloor someone handed me a last tequilla shot and as soon as it went down I knew I needed to get out of the place cuz it wasn't going to stay down! Good times!

"Neighbors complained after they said Danville police had to end their pursuit at the Contra Costa-Alameda County border."

What the hell?

This was basically a home invasion robbery and the police let them go?

Alameda County does not support pursuits. Danville police are from Contra Costa County and they had to stop at the Alameda/Contra Costa border ("Alcosta Blvd" is aptly named….)
So yeah, Alameda County evidently does let them go. Just ask Paula Price.

My blue-and-gold-colored memories are probably faded and inaccurate, but in my mind's eye, I can still picture Mike Pawlawski scrambling down the sidelines on a broken play and, at the last moment before impact, turning back in to the field of play, lowering his head, and inflicting some punishment of his own on a would-be tackler.

In my imagination, Paws seemed to have one (or two) of those plays in every game, although given his durability in '90 and '91, surely it was a much rarer occurrence. But when it did happen, I'd hold my breath to make sure that Paws got back up, then started high-fiving everyone around me because our starting QB was one no-nonsense hombre.

That Copper Bowl invite in 1990 was a big deal. Pretty sure we hadn't been bowling since '79.

Want to say that it was Tony Bouie from Arizona that he knocked over. Can't find video backup for that.
