It seemed to me like Foster didn't realize he was expected to give an opening statement until 10 seconds before he walked on stage. He hasn't been paying attention and his support staff did a poor job ensuring he was prepared. Either way, very embarrassing for him.

This. Complete staff failure.

Still, after the first 30 seconds he should have pivoted to, "We're here, we're ready, and I'm happy to take questions from the media now."

Hahahah I get that some people aren't public speakers but I would be ashamed of this speech at any age.

"I don't know how much you guys know about our school"
*long pause*
"we're in LA"
*another long pause*
"us and USC"

How much you wanna bet that's almost word for word how the UC Los Angeles meeting/interview went with the B10 originally?

"So Bruins, why should we consider you for the B10 conference?"

"I don't know how much you guys know about our school"
*long pause*
"we're in LA"
*another long pause*
"us and USC"

I also imagine it's his exact pitch to recruits. He walks in and tells them they're in LA and either gets the commitment or slowly shuffles out the door

UCLA and USC both really suck at picking head coaches, with Pete Carroll being the one exception over the past several decades.

I thought Chip Kelly would work out there but it turned out he was already past his prime.

Or maybe Chip was successful at Oregon because he only had to make a strong football program a little better. Before Chip become head coach, Bellotti's Oregon teams won 36 games in his last 4 seasons, and played in bowls 12 out of 14 seasons. Add in Uncle Phil's financial support on top of that. UCLA was not in good shape and didn't have those advantages when Chip took that job.

Chip was an innovator, a brilliant coach whose high-tempo RPO offense was ahead of the curve, but by the time he got to UCLA it was fairly widespread.

As well he probably lacked motivation for the job, which was a step down from his previous gigs, he's more into running his offense than into recruiting, and he was already set for life financially. And finally, he is a complete NH Yankee, having lived and worked there through his 40s, LA was a bad cultural fit for him.

We are happy to have the Calimony! And to show our thanks to our friends at UCLA, I found this information that they might find useful today.

Quote:

Foster's buyout comes with a declining percentage of his remaining salary over the remaining years on his contract. For instance, if UCLA was to buy him out after the end of his second season on Dec. 2, 2025, it would owe 60% of his remaining salary in Year 3 and 50% of his remaining salary in Years 4 and 5 a total of roughly $5.27 million. That buyout figure would drop to $3.35 million if the Bruins were to buy out Foster on Dec. 2, 2026, after the end of his third season.

Thats not true at all! I'm still perfectly motivated and within my right to root for them to fail! I hope all 4 lose every game from here to eternity (including, somehow, their games against each other).

I hope their beers are always warm and their steaks are always cold. I hope every step they take they stub their big toe and land on the corner of a Lego. I hope they someone spoils the ending of every movie they'll ever see. And I hope whichever lane they pick in traffic is always the slowest lane.

I hope that whenever they go to the bathroom they don't realize they're out of bath tissue until it's too late. I hope whenever they're on a plane right behind them is a toddler who won't stop kicking their chair and right next to that kid is their crying baby sibling. I hope a massive family is sitting in front of them at every live game, concert, and other live event they go to and fully obstructs their view. I hope their in-laws are always in town and always staying at their house. I hope the first bite of anything they're really looking forward to scalds their mouth and they can't taste the rest

Chip was a brilliant strategic innovator and a fantastic hire as OC (to replace Tedford after he left). He was so successful as OC that Oregon had to promote him to keep him. And he just kept the Oregon machine on overdrive.

Like Monty in the NBA, Chip was ill-suited as a head coach in the NFL and UCLA was a particularly bad fit as head coach for his return to college.

He is now back to being an OC at Ohio State, which is a much better fit for him. The only question is whether his offensive strategies are going to be effective.

Because Christ hired the unqualified Knowlton and then gave him an 8 year guaranteed contract when he lied about the Northwestern job, then turned around and did the same for Wilcox.

I generally agree. He simply could have blanked, which is unfortunate but does happen from time to time, and is a bad first impression.

But the way this will be remembered will be in the context of their wins and losses.

If ucla wins, it will be forgotten.
If ucla loses, the fans will cry how they should have known after media day.

Foster was a good position coach and added Associate Head Coach to his titles so he could be paid more. He never served as a coordinator, and was not on anyone's list for head coach (rather than maybe OC). With such a light resume he came at a discount.
Bieniemy had baggage (discussed a lot on this board) and would accept a discount.

In contrast, the new DC gets what the old DC was payed.

Knowing this board, if we had hired Foster and Bieniemy, even more people would be demanding JK's head on a platter.
