On the eve of our move to the ACC, I wrote something for the Daily Cal looking back on some iconic moments for Cal football as members of the Pac-12.

As someone who has only supported Cal since arriving on campus in 2021, I hope I did your memories justice.

I couldn't include everything I wanted tothe piece is already well over word limitsbut other honorable mentions include Frederickson's kick vs USC in '03 (cut because I was running too close to deadline), the 2018 Cheez-It Bowl, Tedford's first ever playcall against Baylor in 2002 (for context, the year I was born) the Muhammad pick in the 2009 Big Game, and every turnover against Wazzu in 2017.

Go Bears!

I realized I've also doxxed myself to this board, so I promise I won't get on anyone's bad side.

I like your list. I'm older so I have a few to add:

1972 Big Game | On the last play of game, Vince Ferragamo found a diving Steve Sweeney in the end zone on fourth down to defeat Stanford, 24-21. This marked the first of five times in Big Game history that the contest would be determined on the final play. Cue: 1982 Big Game

1988 Big Game Oski and the Tree faced off in a fight that would eventually be broken up by security. The Tree claimed Oski had raised his leg, and ... you get the picture.

1991 USC Slaughter. The Bears' offense gained 601 total yards, a then record for a USC opponent. Russell White ran for a USC opponent-record 229 yards and three touchdowns, and Mike Pawlawski passed for three touchdowns and over 200 yards. I mention this in honor of the Trojans setting the fire that engulfed the Pac conference.

To OP and WIAF's list, I would add:

1996 vs Arizona. If I recall correctly, this was the first quadruple OT game in college football history. It ended on a failed fake PAT two point conversion which Wildcats HC Dick Tomey said he attempted simply because the game had to end. There were about 35,000 in attendance that day and in OT large portions of the crowd migrated from end to end to watch the action up close. The crowd stormed the field after the game. Pat Barnes threw for 503 yards and 8 TDs. We were 6-2 after the win but dropped our last four including a shootout Aloha Bowl.

2002 Big Game. Ended a seven game win streak and capped Cal football's first winning season since 1993. The crowd stormed the field. Boller was lifted above the crowd on the field by a bunch of students and players. Students also brought down the north goalposts. Team finished 7-5 and should have gone to a bowl but for an unreasonable NCAA bowl ban.

Great read! Brought back a ton of memories and educated me on some ones before my time. Honorable mention in my 20ish year fandom was my favorite play of the Dykes era, the 2016 goal line stand to beat Utah in CMS. It wasn't a high stakes game but that last sequence was as loud as CMS ever got under Dykes IMO.

Great list. I would add the 2018 USC game that Cal won in LA. First time in 20 years or so Cal beat USC…

Probably not Top Ten worthy, but I might include the hilarious goal-line stand to beat Utah in 2016. Sonny Dykes refusing to call time outs and the Utes getting flustered and botching their final play. Winning a Dykes game on defense! Who knew?

Tearing down one goalpost after 2002 Big Game and then using it as a wedge to break up security around the other goalpost was a memorable moment. Both ended up around campus IIRC. I also think that they carried one up the stands and nearly threw it over the side until wiser heads prevailed (but my memory might be playing tricks on me and confusing it with another.)

Great list!

Riley's ridiculous run: Cal at Oregon State, 2007
I'm fairly confident that was a home game for Cal and not an away game at Oregon State. Cal's athletic site and ESPN corroborate my memory.

Thus I believe the quoted line should say "Cal vs Oregon State" rather than "Cal at Oregon State."

edit: Article has been updated to say "Cal vs. Oregon State"
