Did CAL really mean to do this?

Frequent flyer miles

Forgive Cal if the Bears get a touch of jetlag this season. And now that we're in the world of NIL, the players should get some frequent flyer points. Cal plays Sept. 7 at Auburn (2,466 miles), Sept. 21 at Florida State (2,575), Oct. 12 at Pitt (2,572), Nov. 8 at Wake Forest (2,769) and Nov. 30 at SMU (1,754). That's a total of 12,136 miles for five away games.

We scheduled Auburn years ago and would have owed them money if we backed out of this year's game. The rest of those trips are what we signed up for when we joined the ACC.

Welcome to the new world of college football! It sucks, but there is no viable alternative at this point.

I'm look forward to attending some of these games so I can rack up my points on American. Good for me as a fan. Sucks for the players. I might add before we get into another discussion on the topic, it also sucks for the teams back East that now have to come to the Bay Area, so Cal will have a greater home court advantage. Moreover, football is one of the lesser impacted sports. The folks who really are screwed are in sports like basketball.

I mean it's always been easier for Eastern teams to fly over here and gain 3 hours than it is the other way around. It's true in all sports, young athletes can stay up a little later (say midnight in their time zone) and just start their routine a little later easier than people can get fully up and ready for a game at 6am their standard time zone. Plus each of the teams in our conference will have one West Coast game max per season while we have to go East 3 times a year plus noncon and once to Texas every other year.

But you're right, other sports will feel the impact much more, I wonder if basketball, for example, might schedule back-to-back weekends of away games and stay out for two weeks followed by two weeks of home games. The ACC would have to help us out with that though to ease the burden and time zone jumping on our players

The eastern teams typically have not been very willing to come to the west coast, where having far less west coast teams, the west coast teams are forced to travel east more, and are used to adapting. I don't want to make more too much of this, because I think the east coast ACC teams will adapt pretty quickly. But the first few night games I think you will see a lot of complaining from the ACC teams.

Yes I will: 1) Because it does not make sense for attracting a large West Coast audience and 2) It would be 2 am for me out in the Western Pacific and the bars that carry the ACC Network will be closing.
