Eh! He is all athlete and no player. If Cal loses, I doubt it will be because of him.

I don't remember much of Sam Jackson. No hard feelings for the kid. He came to Cal, suited up for the Bears, but didn't leave much of an impression. I recall there was some hope that he could use his legs to make things happen, but he wasn't memorable as a scrambler either.

By the way, one of the X posts above mentions Auburn bringing a sizable contingent of fans to last year's game in Berkeley. I think these Auburn folks have no idea how small their contingent was compared to the traveling armies from Nebraska and Ohio State when those squads played in Berkeley. To be fair, Auburn had a decent turnout last year, but they are little league compared to the Cornhuskers and Buckeyes.

That's what puzzles me.
I think he refused to play when he got benched for Nando.
In the video, I learned that he played with Peyton Thorne in high school and Auburn is a reunion for him.
I wish him all the best, after the game, Saturday.

Really says it all that this kid sits around cooking up revenge fantasy scenarios against a coach that did him the indignity of allowing him to start a football game as a QB.

He was being goaded by the press and really didn't say that much ("Honestly, no"?) .

However, I could see wanting to prove himself against us. Cal fans ripped him on this board from the start (and continue to), before the first snap, and Wilcox threw him under the bus after games we won or a game on the road against an eventual National Champion runner-up where he lead to the team to TDs on every single drive he was in (except the last when we ran out the clock in the Red Zone) then never playing again after the win over ASU and another uncharacteristically harsh post game from Wilcox.

The kid came to Cal joyous, left dejected with the press actually showing concern for his mental health like he might harm himself and now he is happy and feeling appreciated as a player again. So he fantasizes about scoring a TD, signing the ball and giving it to Wilcox….

He played the easy part of the schedule and did not pass the eyeball test. He was awful against Auburn, a game you claim he looked good in. Yes, he lost his starting job to a QB who turned the ball over too many times and lost games against the harder part of the schedule. That same QB lit it up weaker defenses like Stanfurd and USC, the latter a loss because USC scored a million points. It is what it is. Nando is better.

iirc, he was offered the chance to switch to wr and turned it down, thinking that he was a qb.

I really didn't think anything that Sam Jackson V said was bad at all. Certainly not hostile. He came here and simply was not good enough to be a Pac-12 QB. He's a straight-up athlete, and frankly, Auburn using him as a WR this year is no different than what Cal asked him to do last year after his on-field performance showed that he wasn't a major conference QB.

The local writers down there just made it a relaxing interview session, and once he was warmed up, he spoke freely about the experience. I thought overall he came off pretty balanced.

One of the local writers had such a thick accent that SJ V had to make sure he properly understood what the guy was asking. That made me chuckle.

On the first game sfter a long run on the second series after he threw a nice TD on the first. He later said he was fine and the coaches held him out for precaution but he lost the starting job to Finley the next week against Auburn in his much anticipated match up against his best friend from high school.

Cal fans didn't think he met "the eye test" was too short "just an athlete" "not a player" and shouldn't get anymore play. Right or wrong, if you were him wouldn't you want to prove us wrong?

Which was idiotic since anybody with eyeballs could see Finley would not be a long-term option.

That was the way I saw it too. He is a good guy and I'm rooting for him to do well, just after this week.

Weirdly this was the most annoying part of the interview for me. First, he has absolutely no idea how well Cal fans travel for OOC games. Our "marquee" OOC game last year (the only time he ever saw our fans in actions) was North Texas. So yeah, that one was never going to impress and him extrapolating from that is just silly.

By contrast, our visiting sections at Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, UNC, etc. (and I was at all of those) have ALL drawn general admiration from opposing fans. Of course their comments have generally been in the vein of "I didn't know you godless commies even liked football"?, but the admiration has been real. What they all miss (always) is the size and wealth of the Cal alumni base. There's enough of us who can afford to travel cross country or who live on the east coast that even a small percentage of our alumni will impress.

By contrast, Sam thought the Auburn crowd was a "wow"? Child, please. It was fine. But literally not in the same universe as Ohio State or Nebraska. And honestly I don't think even equivalent to what we brought to Notre Dame or Texas just a few short years ago.

I know a ton of Cal folks who are going to this game. Cal had to charter an entire 2nd plane just for major donors. Something we've only done once or twice over the last few decades. I think our visiting section will impress. It always does. Just hope our team can as well.

Jackson comported himself with reasonable humility and class when he was here. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to play quarterback very well. Now he's gone. Best wishes to him, except I hope he doesn't help Auburn win this Saturday.

That is all.

I don't know if the "godless commies" instinct towards Cal from opposing fans has increased more in recent times or not. I remember even back during Good Tedford Era, the USC (spit) fans wore T-shirts with the Cal logo doctored to look a bit like the old CCCP sickle and hammer. That was probably the most creative thing those Trojan mensa members ever came up with. I do have a sense though that Berkeley-as-lightning-rod-for-critiques from other parts of the country is as strong now as ever. You could kind of "hear" it in the way the beat writers asked their "questions."

As for Sebasta dropping a "Child, please." Now I've seen it all. And I agree. I believe AU probably had 5-7K in CMS last year, and yet to hear the AU fanbase tell it, you'd think it was 45K. As they might say: "Bless their hearts."

That's a really thick accent when Sam Jackson has to clarify not once but twice if the reporter was using the word "hard" in his question. Reminds me of a guy I once worked with down in Georgia who was smart as a whip but was also a walking caricature of what might be politely referred to as "down home." During meetings, if there was a newbie present and introductions were being made, he liked to spit his tobacco juice in a cup, then lean back in his chair and proclaim he was "From L.A." As in "Lower Alabama."
