From the NCAA website:
Division I
40 percent of required coursework for a degree must be complete by the end of the second year, 60 percent by the end of the third year and 80 percent by the end of their fourth year.
Student-athletes are allowed five years of eligibility and athletically related financial aid.
All Division I student-athletes must earn at least six credit hours each term to be eligible for the following term and must meet minimum grade-point average requirements related to the school's GPA standards for graduation.
Out of high school he was offered by Notre Dame, Purdue, Wisconsin and Minnesota all decent academic schools, and of course was admitted to Cal as a transfer.
From a recent article on Sam Jackson:
"Until then, Jackson continues to work on football and towards his degree in sociology with plans to graduate in December."
So he is not only on course the graduate, he is on course to graduate EARLY, after only 3.5 years. I don't see how that is possible if he was not passing his classes at Cal.
