Of course their comments have generally been in the vein of "I didn't know you godless commies even liked football"?, but the admiration has been real.

By contrast, Sam thought the Auburn crowd was a "wow"? Child, please. It was fine. But literally not in the same universe as Ohio State or Nebraska. And honestly I don't think even equivalent to what we brought to Notre Dame or Texas just a few short years ago.

I don't know if the "godless commies" instinct towards Cal from opposing fans has increased more in recent times or not. I remember even back during Good Tedford Era, the USC (spit) fans wore T-shirts with the Cal logo doctored to look a bit like the old CCCP sickle and hammer. That was probably the most creative thing those Trojan mensa members ever came up with. I do have a sense though that Berkeley-as-lightning-rod-for-critiques from other parts of the country is as strong now as ever. You could kind of "hear" it in the way the beat writers asked their "questions."

As for Sebasta dropping a "Child, please." Now I've seen it all. And I agree. I believe AU probably had 5-7K in CMS last year, and yet to hear the AU fanbase tell it, you'd think it was 45K. As they might say: "Bless their hearts."

If you want an idea of how auburn people view us, read the comments section below. Cal twitter guy is clearly trolling and the auburn fans clearly couldn't take the hint…..their deep rooted biases just wouldn't allow them to

Too many of us are Godless Commies, but I love us anyways.
CCCP or USSR? Or both?

U$C thinks everyone who can't afford to go there is a Communist. I believe $C brought along UCLA to the B!G to make themselves looks good, like the cheerleader having an ugly BFF/wing-girl.

Yeah, I think there's some Blue-Red hate ongoing and as a third generation Californian, all I can say is "We're not all Commies."

Bless our hearts, indeed.

One of the local writers had such a thick accent that SJ V had to make sure he properly understood what the guy was asking. That made me chuckle.

The reporter you're referring to is Phillip Marshall and he's certainly a yokel.

That's a really thick accent when Sam Jackson has to clarify not once but twice if the reporter was using the word "hard" in his question. Reminds me of a guy I once worked with down in Georgia who was smart as a whip but was also a walking caricature of what might be politely referred to as "down home." During meetings, if there was a newbie present and introductions were being made, he liked to spit his tobacco juice in a cup, then lean back in his chair and proclaim he was "From L.A." As in "Lower Alabama."

Haha yeah I grew up in Pensacola, FL and that's a joke used often

You know I travel to games to see different parts of the country, enjoy a **GAME** and hang out with people that I otherwise would only meet sparingly or in passing. I get that CFB has always been regionalistic and a bit of a cultural war but I think there's a wrong way and right way to do it. Examples:

If it's just jokes about assumed cultural differences I'm here for it, if Auburn fans said some stuff like this to me at the game I'd think it was hilarious

"Now this is called barbecue, you've probably never heard of it but it's one of the 2 major religions down here. I'm gonna have to warn you, this is not vegan meat and the buns aren't gluten free. The cow was not adopted by an independently-wealthy socialite and attended top private schools before being humanely euthanized in a 5* resort after a slew of spa treatments. Even the cornbread isn't fair trade and ecologically sourced"

I have thick skin but the only time I ever was ready to fight someone at a game was when I went to the Warriors-Cavs '16 Finals series in Cleveland. The guy next to me (unprompted, I swear I hadn't said a word to him) screamed in my face "f*** you, you n* lover" and a little more but it got political and I don't want to derail the thread. Needless to say I thought that was just a bit over the top but it obviously doesn't represent the whole city or state where my grandparents were born and where I still have a lot of family today.

The only place where I refuse to go to a game is southern cal who has the worst fans I've ever experienced in my life en masse

Jackson comported himself with reasonable humility and class when he was here. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to play quarterback very well. Now he's gone. Best wishes to him, except I hope he doesn't help Auburn win this Saturday.

That is all.
This. Reportedly he wasn't an academic fit at Cal, so its best for all that he moved on - particularly when his play was not commensurate with his NIL money. No reason for hard feelings here.

Though the "he's flunking out" story came out after the ASU game, before even midterms of his very first semester at Cal, so it is tough to know the basis for that. Whatever the case, he did not "flunk out" because he is academically eligible at Auburn., which he wouldn't be if he was not making "academic progress" his previous semester at Cal.

Didn't we beat ole miss twice with Hugh freeze as coach? Hope to have a similar defensive effort this Saturday with offense kicking into another gear. Really how our offensive line is at full strength this week.

Wish Sam well, and not its appropriate to throw examples,/ shade/or belittle his time at Cal, but having some exposure to him, the maturity aspect across the board should have been better. Incredible athlete and wished He would have accepted other roles that were offered up to him. And to be objective, He hurt his shoulder in the first game and gamely tried to play thru it - though eventually needing surgery for it. Plus when you factor in his upbringing - he has beaten some obstacles. Hopefully He has a successful season with Auburn and is smart with his NIL monies, which his advisor skillfully has structured for him.

I listened to that whole thing and it feels like players would listen to him, would respect him and his body of work, and would play for him. 100% How did we let him get away?

Born in Berkeley, grew up in Vallejo, played at Laney, should have gotten more carries at Cal but had a solid NFL career including a Super Bowl. Peyton Manning told him he is the smartest guy he has played with? Plus his ability to connect with Silicon Valley? Shoot, make him AD.

Around the 29 minute mark talks about the downside of defensive minded coaches especially the impact on developing young QBs….

31 min mark the importance of hiring HCs who are alums (even in NFL) and understand the culture and recruit to it.

I am not suggesting (and did not mean to suggest) that he flunked out. I think the reporting was that he wasn't invested in the academic piece of life at Cal which can be super challenging.

That being said, I don't think you can draw any conclusions from the fact that he was accepted at Auburn. I mean really? It is the SEC. And there are ways to get eligible if you had problems at your prior school (online courses, etc.).

And to reiterate, I wish him well other than this weekend. I though he was classy and likable in his short time at Cal.

No not accepted, eligible to play immediately anywhere Auburn or Cal by NCAA rules because he made the required academic progress in the prior year at Cal. In other words, if he did not pass his classes at Cal, according to NCAA rules he would have to sit out the season no mater where he was playing.
