Retired during her last match and handed over the captain's band before leaving. Nice moment.

What a great role model! She makes me proud to be a Cal alumnus. She's one of those people whose greatness transcended her athletic talent. I hope we have not seen the last of her in the public arena.

Heck of a player for Cal, club, and country. Congrats on a great career and baby #2!

The USWNT coach should have included Alex Morgan in the Olympic roster to allow her to leave the game the way she deserves to.

The Olympic roster was too limited in number to play the "sentimental" game...she didn't need another Olympic run to justify her soccer greatness.

Which more deserving player should she have replaced?

That's a good argument. But at the same time, just about any bench player could've been replaced and no one would've blinked an eye. Alex Morgan is (still!) one of the big names/draws in US women's soccer. Allowing her one last hurrah would've been to everyone's benefit.
Morgan had no interest in being on the team for less than a starting position. It wasn't even the World Cup...she did her part in elevating the sport...being in Paris would have meant nothing.

On what is this assertion based? Did you speak with her directly? Did she state that somewhere on the record?

Definitely said during studio and in-game, (by the former players), as well as thrown around by Men in Blazers.
Is this really a controversial position to accept? I'm sure we can easily imagine a basketball player having the same thoughts....and Olympics isn't as big of a deal as World Cup anyway....

So basically people are projecting their own thoughts as Alex's thoughts and we're supposed to accept that as fact?

Olympics are a pretty big deal in women's soccer, a lot more so than for the men where younger B teams compete.

still not as big as World Cup....it's a limited format and limited players...

People who I felt comfortable having insight into Alex's leaning, especially seeing makes sense in the world of sports, and with an elite athlete in the sport...
But okay, it's all wrong, and she was pissed AF about not playing in another Olympics....you can win the day, have at it...

I disagree. It is equal with the World Cup. I have no idea why they limited it to 18 players, maybe to not disrupt too many players. But these were the 18 best non-injured players the US could play, and Morgan was not ranked in to the top 18.

(1) I was unaware it was a binary situation;
(2) Way to move the goalposts from saying she refused to join the US Olympic Team unless she were a starter; and
(3) Who are these people you "felt comfortable having insight into Alex's leaning?" Dis they speak to her or are they projecting their own thoughts and feelings into the matter?

Anyways, Defector.com had a very nice write up on Alex's career today (subscriber only, but worth a few bucks):

"Alex Morgan Conquered the World"

https://defector.com/alex-morgan-conquered-the-world

Here are my two favorite passages:

Quote:

Morgan was also important off the field, as she helped lead the women's team's fight for equal pay within the U.S. Soccer ecosystem. She was one of the five playersalong with Rapinoe, Hope Solo, Carli Lloyd, and Becky Sauerbrunnwho filed a wage discrimination complaint against the federation in 2016, and she was part of the lawsuit against U.S. Soccer in 2019 that helped pave the way for equal pay in 2022. Morgan took to her star status with aplomb, never shy to speak up against unfair treatment of her teammates. She advocated for herself and for the sport, and now she gets to retire with the game in what she calls an "amazing place."

Quote:

Tears and all, she walked off the field the way she played, with her head held high. For the past decade and a half, Morgan helped to define women's soccer, and to carve out a space for the sport to grow. If the sport is now in an "amazing place," it is in large part because of what Alex Morgan was able to accomplish.
