Man oh man, what a game and what a win for Cal today! Congratulations to all y'all!

Give your boys some credit. They went into Jordan-Hare Stadium, one of the toughest places to play in the entire country, let alone the SEC, and got a huge win over a much improved Auburn team. As you all have seen, the game day atmosphere down here in SEC country is an entirely different animal than what y'all are used to seeing out west. It's just larger, louder, more electric, and there's so much more enthusiasm in the stadium. So for Mendoza and the team to go in that stadium, in front of 87K and play as well as they did… that's worthy of high praise. This is a BIG deal.

Before anyone rebuts that, Auburn is a much improved team from the one y'all saw last year.

It was a lot more about what Cal did to Auburn rather than what Auburn did to themselves. California's defense played lights out the entire game and forced Auburn's offense into many mistakes. To collect five turnovers on the road against an SEC opponent in as hostile an environment as you'll see all year is pretty impressive.

Hats off to Fernando Mendoza for a great performance today. I know he didn't play as well in the 2nd half as he did in the 1st, but it was good enough. He was efficient, he led his troops like a grizzled veteran, and he made some critical plays that ultimately helped the Bears win today. Oh, and your duct-taped offensive line? Hats off to them, too. That was a challenge, and they passed that test.

Funny thing: I called my brother (who's an Auburn fan) after the game to fill him in on what happened in the game today, and after a brief silence, he hung up on me. He didn't sound too thrilled.

For the record, I've never bought into the whole "SEC supremacy" hype, and this is why! Anyone, regardless of conference, can beat anybody, regardless of conference, on any given day. See NIU beating Notre Dame today. See Oklahoma State beating Arkansas. See USC beating LSU this past Sunday. See Miami beating Florida last week.

You get the idea.

Brain and brawn won the day for the Golden Bears today. Congratulations again to all of you, and keep it rolling! Go Bears and Vols.

Thanks for the kind words, VR - we are feeling fantastic today.

Speaking of fantastic, what an impressive beat down you guys doled out today. Knoxville must be pretty jazzed right now!

We play NC State in 6 weeks in Berkeley - I'm curious if you have a scouting report, or any takeaways after your game today that might shed some light for our matchup with them.

Man, your Vols put a beatdown on the Wolfpack today! It wasn't even close! You've got yourself a special quarterback!

Also, to your point about the SEC, Texas Tech just lost to Wazzu! Sure, it was at the Palouse, but it's still a Pac-2 school, now!

A fan of an SEC team who actually knows something about our program? I'm . . . confused. In my experience most other fans can't even name a player on our team, let alone know who we're missing. Anyway hats off to you, you're a real CFB fan and you know your ***** Y'all have a solid team too, maybe one day we can get back to the days when we were both in the top 15 playing early season marquee noncon games against each other, those were the good times. Good luck on your season

Well, I'll admit, the entire state of Tennessee is pretty excited about this team right now, and it's good to see. Josh Heupel (former Oklahoma QB and Heisman runner-up in 2000) is our coach and has Vol Nation believing. Also, Nico Iamaleava, from right in your neck of the woods in Long Beach, is indeed a special quarterback, despite not playing his best game last night. But really, the stars of last night's game was our defense. They played lights out, essentially from start to finish.

Which… brings me to Cal and their meeting with NC State in Berkeley. The Wolfpack are coached by veteran head coach Dave Doeren, who is a good, solid coach. The Pack were expected to be better personnel-wise this year, but they came out of the gate very sluggish last week in their opener against the Catamounts of Western Carolina. They even trailed in the fourth quarter of that game before taking the lead and pulling away.

Grayson McCall is a veteran quarterback; a transfer from Coastal Carolina. I think he is a fifth-year senior, but I am not 100 percent sure on that. He is a very good quarterback, but seems to be struggling a bit to adjust to Power Four ball. The Wolfpack's top playmaker on offense is receiver KC Concepcion, who caught five passes for 53 yards last night against the Vols. However, much of that was in the first quarter; thanks to the UT defense, he was pretty quiet the rest of the way. They also have a very good pass catcher in tight end Justin Joly, a transfer from UConn who had a stellar performance last year when the Huskies visited Knoxville. Last night, Joly only caught four balls for 30 yards.

Defensively, Davin Vann, their senior defensive end, is their top playmaker. He is a great pass rusher who can affect the quarterback if the pass protection is not up to par. Vann had one hit on Iamaleava last night that led to an 87-yard pick six by senior cornerback Aydan White.

Tennessee's defensive front only held NC State to 39 yards rushing, with Hollywood Smothers leading the way with 25. I think that if Cal can control the line of scrimmage and stop the run, then get pressure on McCall, then you'll force him into some critical mistakes. The trick is that being a veteran, McCall is very difficult to speed up progression-wise. Typically, he is pretty unflappable. Control the line of scrimmage, stop the run, rush the passer, get McCall on the ground a few times, and force some turnovers, the Bears will be in good shape.

Offensively, Cal just needs to run the football effectively. Ott needs to get himself right and fast; he's the workhorse. Although Thomas is a very capable back, as well, as he proved yesterday on the Plains, Ott is the home run threat, and he needs to be effective for you guys to have a chance at beating NC State. Finally, you can't have any critical penalties. Tennessee had seven for 70 yards, and while those penalties wound up not affecting the outcome of the game at all, they were still a problem, and will be magnified against better competition. So it behooves Cal to stay disciplined and play complementary football against a team that while they have underperformed so far this year, can still be dangerous.

If you have any other questions about NC State, I'll do my best to get back to you!
