I am sure there are some college kickers that could get both those field goals. I also believe Coe can as well.

College field goal kickers, especially this year, but usually always are a liability. Cal is no different

2 fgs is such a small sample size and he **barely** missed from 55, give him time. Even in the NFL, Robbie Gould and Nick Folk were cut after just a couple consecutive misses and went on to be two of the best kickers of their generation. It's the knee jerk reactions by coaches and fans that are more damaging than letting the numbers play out. It's a very small sample size and both kicks looked good but he just pushed them. A slight adjustment and we have a kicker who can hit from 50+, he already has the distance

Let's get a kicker for godsakes. We have zero margin for error and we have 10's of thousands playing soccer around the Bay Area and yet we look to Australia.

Apparently ,we had 'some' "margin for error" against Auburn. Including terrible officiating on the PI call against Nohl on the end zone int, and against Harris on the targeting call, both of which contributed to 'gifting' a TD to Auburn. Yet Cal overcame, and [at last] demonstrated the ability to "finish."

Coe put the ball out of the end zone on every kickoff. That was a huge improvement over last year. He has a track record of being a very good kicker and had multiple options to go to a lot of schools. He will win a game or two for Cal.

Suggesting getting a "soccer guy" from somewhere is really uninformed. Kickers are almost always targeted from off season or high school developmental football kicking camps. And college football has a huge number of Australian punters as there is a very successful specific punting camp for US football in Australia. Kickers who have played Australian Rules Football have made for great punters. There is over 60 Aussie kickers on college rosters this year. Cal isn't the only school recruiting Aussies.

You didn't think those punts by our Australian punter being downed inside the two yard line contributed to the Bears win? Cal easily won the special teams yesterday, in spite of the two misses. Cal has made a huge special teams kicking upgrade this year.

Coe is unequivocally an improvement over how our kicking started last year. At a core level it's meaningful that he's 11 of 11 on extra points considering that wasn't even a given last year with Luckhurst.

I do think it's fair to say, though, that his miss from 20-29 yard range in what was essentially a zero pressure situation late in the game is cause for concern. You can explain some of the misses by the environment, nerves, or sheer distance but not that one.

sadly but predictably, your predictions about Coe and cal kicking were a little off. The classic Cal "knee jerk" reaction actually is NOT to pull the guy but to let him continue to go out there and lose games. …that's what's damaging both to he players and the fans. Time to move on. The fact we thought positioning ourselves for a game winning field goal with time on the clock and them having 3 timeouts for a 40 yd kick with Coe was horrible ….and I watched this strategy being played out all the time yelling at the TV as many others did as well.

Coe has been a successful kicker at multiple schools.

Similarly, Luckhurst was highly recruited and before coming to Cal.

What happened?

I didn't watch the game but I saw a replay of the kick. It looked like his plant foot slipped. Not sure if the field was soggy or it had rained or what happened. A bit of a high snap, fast hold/put down and then the kick. If anyone knows goal kicks or field goal kicking - the plant foot is just as important as a solid strike on the ball. Its why the ball barely went 40 yards. Unlucky.

Interesting tidbit from the past from someone who has been watching Cal football for decades. There was a time,
around the early 1980s, I believe, when Cal had four of their kickers in the pros. Quite amazing.

I think Aussies should have an advantage given the ball shape, however, over 90% of NFL kickers have a soccer background and that helps them with football.

Cal football needs to talk to our Cal soccer coach and see if he can throw some names our way, should not be hard to find guys with a heavy leg and precision touch.
