I've been a Cal fan for more than two decades, so I've seen some bad ones, but I've got to say these last two losses are right up there in my top 5. We've lost bigger, more important games. We've been blown out in embarrassing fashion. We've lost too many heartbreakers to count. But the FSU and Miami losses were so, so demoralizing because with any sort of competent coaching we're 5-0 right now, ranked into the top 15 and going into the meat of our schedule feeling confident we can beat anyone we face. Now that's gone. Sure, we might find a way to eek out 3 or 4 more wins and get some lame, bottom feeder bowl, in which case Wilcox will accept an apathetic shrug from general Cal fandom and keep on keeping on for another few years of mediocrity. Sometimes a 7 or 8 win season is a victory in its own right. This is not one of those years. Given our schedule and the level of play in the ACC, this was a prime year for us to contend for a conference title and a playoff spot.

Agreed 100%. have said any better.

I concur these last two losses were maybe the worst because they were easily avoidable with a few more plays, calls, etc. going out way.

Thinking about blown leads, 1988 at UW sticks in my mind as I was there. Ahead 27-3 at halftime and losing 28-27 just sucked. I've seen my share of Cal just not being able to put a game away, but that one and this Miami loss are the worst.

Was that UW game the one where UW pooched a kickoff (about 15-20 yards in the air) and no Cal player touched the ball and UW recovered the most unusual onside kick I'd ever seen?

Here's some:

The loss to lIlinois 4 when Morton's TD pass to Bradly was ruled that his foot was on the end line prevented the upset.

The loss to UCLA in 1975. If we won, we go to the Rose Bowl. Also USC losing to UCLA in 1975, if they tie we go to the Rose Bowl.

Losing to Stanford in 1971, if we win we're PAC 8 Champions, and might go to the Rose Bowl if we win in Court.

I was a freshman in Fall 2018, and here's my personal list in chronological order:

- 2018 vs UCLA: Homecoming game vs. an 0-5 UCLA. We're on a losing streak and we're the favorite and they absolutely smoke us 7-37.

- 2019 vs ASU: We're ranked #15, Friday night lights game, campus is energized. Garbers goes down and we lose. Fall to unranked the next week.

- 2019 @ Oregon: We play well but the backup QB can't hang and we lose. I still think we beat this Oregon team (which went on to win the Rose Bowl) with Garbers.

- 2020 vs Stanford: This whole season was terrible but the block put the cherry on top.

- 2021 vs Nevada: Back in Memorial post-pandemic, the fanbase is ready for Cal football, and we blow it to Nevada of all teams. And we end up with 5 wins and no bowl to boot.

- 2022 @ ND: We get screwed by a terrible call and this gives us our first loss. Season goes horribly after this.

- 2023 vs Auburn: Missed field goals.

- 2023 vs USC: Blew a lead and couldn't take revenge on USC for breaking the Pac. This one hurt.

- 2024 @ FSU: Have a chance at 4-0 and potential ranking, but succumb to an ugly dogfight and can't get the ball in the endzone.

- 2024 vs Miami: don't need to talk about this, this might be the worst

I think the 1975 USC - UCLA game may be the most upset I've ever been at a game -- especially one where my team was not involved.

Everything about the end of the '75 season was awful. After the titanic head-to-head between the Bears and Trojans (one of the best games I've ever witnessed) the Cal season was on a triumphant upward trajectory. USC went into the tank.

However, in those days bowls had to compete to get the teams and matchups they wanted. Some bowl snatched up USC with a few weeks left to play. Nobody took the Bears.

The Bears crushed Stanford and then waited for USC to beat UCLA.....but they choked.

And then Chuck Muncie got robbed of the Heisman (which went to Archie Griffin for a 2nd time)

YPT, it saddens me that you can recite so many bad losses at such a young age. I hope things turn around, lest you wake up in a few decades and find yourself looking like the rest of us.

C'mon, Bears, let's do it! Do it for the young people... before it's too late!

And you thought Cal losing to Miami last weekend was bad. Not even close to Alabama losing lo Vanderbilt last weekend. Highlights below. Think Vanderbilt hadn't beaten Alabama in forty years.

What? Alabama's loss is just a bad loss. It's not some punch in the gut loss which is what true Cal fans are discussing. Upsets happen - it's something for Vandy fans to celebrate - 'Bama fans to feel shame about - but it's not "bad" like the last second/minute reversals or a loss when all sorts of things were on the line, like a Rose Bowl bid. Even Cal's loss to 'Furd in 91 was worse, because it was a high stakes rivalry game and that's probably not even close to one of the Top 10 "worst" losses. .

Yes to all this. Was also my senior year at Cal and I really believed that being in the Rose Bowl would be a karmic payback for all the mediocre/lousy Cal teams I watched as a kid.

It was my first year at Cal. You want to know what a naive freshman I was? After U$C refused to beat or even tie FUCLA for us, I just figured, "Oh well, I guess we'll just have to go to the Rose Bowl next year!"

Now, nearly half a century later, I'm still waiting... and the Rose Bowl isn't even a thing like that anymore. Still, I wait.

Yeah, if I remember the normally sure handed Steve Rivera muffed a fair catch punt fairly deep in Cal territory as one of the turnovers to set up one of UCLA's score. Then in the USC-UCLA game, USC was in position for a fairly easy field goal attempt, but McKay opted to go on 4th down for the win by going after the first down/touchdown. Can't blame him in their rivalry game, but of course a tie would have put us into the Rose Bowl.

Yeah that's a long time ago now, I was a student 80-84. I guess you could say Mouse Davis and the run and shoot was somewhat of a precursor to Sonny Dykes. Ron Rivera was about the only one worth watching for some of those lean times.

HK,
You couldn't have been more accurate in your description and memories. I don't remember it being an "easy" FG, but I could easily be wrong...and like you said, in a rivalry game, he was going for the win.
I was in the stands at that SC-UCLA game wearing a "Cal Rose Bowl" shirt....having to root for SC just made my hate of them even deeper...

For about 1 1/2 quarters Mouse Davis' offense looked unstoppable with Gale Gilbert running it. I don't think for a minute Mouse was a long term solution but Jay Torchio stuck a fork in Mouse and our season quite early.

The worst loss in Cl football wasn't a game loss, but a coaching loss. When Bruce Snyder left after the 1991 season, Cal loss it's chance to become the team of the 1990's. Cal under Snyder finished 10-2 in 1991, ranked #8 in the nation, and had a chance to have it's bet recruiting class ever, including a future Heisman trophy winner. When Cal couldn't keep Snyder, every thing fell apart. I've seen post blaming the AD and/or the chanchanler. Whoever was at fault, Cal was a weak team for the next 10 years.

I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned this loss to USC as it was just last year, had a similar profile to the Miami game (Cal gets a big lead and fritters it away), and USC and Miami are both schools that are easy to hate. As usual, our post-game stop at Triple Rock eased the pain before the long drive home.

Not sure if it's possible or even good strategy in this NIL day and age but Snyder was building a great football program: solid coaches/recruiters, solid (not necessarily star) players and solid, fundamental football. We had the potential to be awesome. Speaking with a great, under the radar type player like Chris Richards last Saturday made me pretty sad and furious at Cal's administration. I can't imagine Snyder being the type of guy who asked for an exorbitant amount of compensation. The Cal 65 year saga. What a coincidence...I'm 65.

Snyder was asking for "market value" and probably would have accepted anything in the ballpark, but it was unprecedented that Cal pay its football coach that much and Chancellor Tien couldn't countenance doing it, so he had Bockrath lowball Snyder, who felt disrespected and then took a great offer from ASU. Major, major mistake on Cal's part. One of the recruits he had coming in was Rashaan Salaam, who won the Heisman at Colorado, but mainly, just not having Snyder anymore was a huge blow from which we never recovered until early Tedford.

I've always blamed Bob Bockrath. Chancellor Tien probably got a pass from me because I was just so pleased to see a Cal chancellor out there leading "Go Bears!" cheers in front of the student body after Ira Michael Heyman's chancellorship ended in '90. Heyman was commonly thought of as anti-athletics, so Tien seemed like a breath of fresh air.

Totally agree about Tien's "Go Bears" outward demeanor as opposed to the bow-tied Heyman (who was decidedly anti-big-time-athletics, but if you believe the story, Bockrath was carrying out Tien's marching orders as far as retaining Bruce Snyder. He didn't want to face the faculty as the Chancellor that had approved a huge* salary for the football coach.

I really think we're in a better situation to succeed now. Hopefully, there's still time before the next realignment.

* It may have seemed "huge" at the time ($700,000/yr?), but it was just "market" for a proven winner.

I was sitting on the west end of the Coliseum on Cal's final drive. Cal's left end kinda got a little tangled up and so the pass was really not catcheable by him. Used to be a full game video of the game on the web but don't see it now. Aiclassic. Cal lost its highly regarded tight end right befole the half. That might have cost us the game.

Not during his first couple of years while he was building. He also turned Wilcox type players into stars.
Note: my memory. Didn't really investigate this. I don't really expect anyone to do the leg work for me but if you do and prove me wrong that's cool.

They had an oral commitment from a future Heisman Trophy for that upcoming class (Salaam), and then a future NFL QB (Plummer) was joining Snyder the year after that (he would follow him to ASU.) Off the top of my head, the incoming class also had a future NFL O-linemen (Pilgrim)...
During Snyder's tenure, you have some of the development you are talking about...certainly Pawlawski, Auzenne, and Ahanatou developed way above their recruiting ranking, and became NFL draft picks. But he was also recruiting the likes of S. Dawkins, Russell White, et. al. Look at the Cal players in the 2004 Draft, which I assume were all Snyder recruits:
Todd Steussie
Minnesota

Eric Mahlum
Indianapolis

Doug Brien
San Francisco

Eric Zomalt
Philadelphia

Issac Booth
Cleveland

Steussie started on defense if my memory is right...so yeah, you can have developmental points there. The rest, I believe were very solid recruits.

Absolutely true. Would have changed Cal football for a long time...

Not sure what you mean about "not star players".... Snyder has big time recruits...

Issac Booth
Cleveland

Look at his first years. I bet they were full of 3 stars. It was only after anyone could see how well they were coached and what a solid staff he built. It took him a few years. He wasn't a flashy guy.
