Wilcox totally F'D this game.
Starting with the idiotic decision to go for 2 on the first score. We kill the momentum of a great drive by running a dumb play and having to chase points the whole game. And guess what? It bit us in the a**!!!!
This game should have been Mendoza's to try and win at the end. Dude was a baller the whole game despite getting knocked down every freakin play. But what do we do? Get conservative and play for FG position, take Mendoza off the field and put in Rogers for the predictable run.
Then put the game in the hands of a 50% kicker who has repeatedly demonstrated failure. Even if he makes it, Pitt has 2 minutes and kicker that hit from 58 earlier in the game.

I think that Wilcox plays so conservative because his offense is so Stone Age he can't come up with a play to get anyone open.
Notice the last couple of weeks in crunch time we can't get anyone open downfield? Play after play. Yet last week with Miami backed up on their own 5 yard line they manage to find a guy 20 yards open who goes for 75 yards! Wilcox knows he can get 2, maybe 3 yards up the gut several plays and settle for a FG attempt. And when he misses, oh well, he put us in a position to win. Except he really didn't. He plays offense defensively, because that's the guy he is. He can't change.
He just finds ways to lose. We've seen it time and time again.
He does not have a winner's mentality.

Honestly, with good skill position talent and a bad line, we should be playing something more like the Air Raid. Get the ball out quick to playmakers, then hand it off against a light box as a counter to that. But Wilcox could never imagine playing that way.

This is an underrated part of the terrible strategy. There was too much time left to play for the FG. You needed to try to force Pitt to get a TD on their last drive.

Exactly. Mendoza was something like 19-21 in the 1H. It's not like the short pass game wasn't working. We could've kept doing that all the way to the goal line at the end. Just confounding why Wilcox always feels like he needs to do something different in crunch time.
JUST DO WHATS BEEN WORKING!!! Jesus Christ he's such an idiot.
Yeah, better recipe is to stop passing so all plays end at or behind the line.oski003 said:ducky23 said:sycasey said:CalBarn said:CalGB94 said:I have a few!westcoastdude said:

Passing game is pretty good when we allow it to take the lead. If we get stuffed twice and then try to make it up by throwing on 3rd down, not so much.
