The OL

OL play is obviously one of the biggest problems with this team. I would argue that our OL has been outplayed by our opponent's OL in all six of our games, including UCD and SDSU (in other words, whatever the stats might say, their OL looked better against our defense than did ours against their D). I would also argue that despite our other problems, with even average OL play we would be 6-0 with an inside track at a conference championship. So what seems to be the root of the OL's problem? Injuries/depth? Talent level? Scheme? Coaching? I see the symptoms like the rest of you: we get zero push, there are free defenders in the backfield on nearly every running play, Fernando has very little time on passing plays, poor snaps, and penalties galore. What I want to know are the causes.

Also, has Bloesh ever been successful as an OL coach? I was surprised to see his face on TV - he looked younger than I would've thought. Is it possible he is in over his head?

Yes, I know the team has other problems, but this thread is about the OL.

He might be a good OL coach or a good O Coordinator, but he certainly sucks at doing both at the same time.

How important is the oline anyway?

I agree OL has been our biggest weakness over the past 10 years. With our poor OL, running the ball becomes so much harder with no push and penalty prone bad technique. We aren't good enough to overcome all of our holding and false start calls.

If we don't prioritize the offensive line going forward, it will just be rinse repeat ad nauseum.

But we have a monster offensive line?

Does anyone honestly think our oline is that much less talented than last years oline. With last years oline, we're 6-0.

So what's the difference between last year and this year? Hmmmm….

Wilcox can't do a single thing right.

If we had kept spav and lost bloesch, we'd probably be 6-0
If we had gotten rid of both, we'd probably be 6-0 (well maybe not, Wilcox could've messed up those hires)

But what does he do? He promotes a guy who is probably an average OC and decided we don't need an Oline coach at all

Seems to me Spav leaving was his own doing.

With the new rules seemingly not limiting the number of assistant coaches (though hard to believe), Bloesch now can get the help he needs to coach up our TOP TEN offensive lineman (I think they get hurt more than any other position group) and can finally have time to play work on offensive play calling.

I don't get it, either. Two years ago, we had the worst O-line ever. Last year's, coached by Bloesch, was much improved. This year, so far, with a lot of the same guys from last year and four portal additions, we are very nearly as crappy as we were in 2022.

RT: Session improved a lot last year and he seems at least solid:

IOL: Seems to be our weakness, especially with Vatikani hardly playing and McDonald havin missed a game or two. Reimer seems halfway decent, but he is one of the guys that keeps getting called for penalties. We seem to have overrated some of these guys, both as prep prospects and portal transfers.

LT: Morrow is semi-okay and still projects to be good, but for "good", we're probably looking at next year. The backup OT is a bit overmatched, especially against athletic pass rushers.

We need better talent, but still shouldn't be this bad. Hopefully Vatikani returns and things start to gel.

IMO biggest weakness over 8 years has been in order:
1. OC
2. OL
3. DL
4. QB
5. Game management
6. FG kicking
7. Kick returning
8. TE (good this year)

I've made the same point several times recently, including earlier today. Then, I mentioned that some other poster indicated the restrction on the number of coaching assistants was lifted about six months ago. Can anyone in the know confirm that this is so? Has there been a rule change but it is not now effective?

Some journalist should raise this issue with Wilcox in the next presser.

1. Is there a new rule re the number of assistant coaches?
2. If so, what is it and when is it effective?

Add -- better judgement by our head coach as to when to go for a two point conversion. Another stunt like that should get him fired.

Reach out to Tedford and see if he'd come on in a consulting capacity.

Good idea!!! Would you Tedford choose the areas he thinks need the most improvement.

What I would do first is to make Wilcox study the "book" on how to make the best football decisions during a game and require him to get a 99% correct grade before he doesn't have to do that anymore.
