Watch the press conference with Wilcox.
That is a guy who is about to completely lose this team.
Would Coach Rivera step in to coach the rest of the season to save the program???
Wilcox needs to resign immediately or he should be fired tomorrow.

That press conference lost me as a fan. He was straight lying about 3-4 things. The fact that he defended the initial 2 point conversion and then tried to claim that they were going for the first down on the final drive after running it 3x and pulling the starting QB. He'll regret that press conference for sure.

I didn't watch the presser but how could he possibly have been going for the TD by pulling Mendoza. That's wild. Mendoza was balling all game - he wasn't perfect - he needed to throw the ball a bit quicker - but it's near the bottom of "problems" with that game.

I take that back, Mendoza was excellent - esp given the OL situation - and that's just a nitpick. Pulling him for Rogers on what would be a game-winning drive is mind-blowing.

Wilcox is lousy at interviews / press conferences. He either does coach speak, or, when he's really frustrated. like in 2021 and 2022, he gets lock jaw.

But so what? What coaches say to the media in general is bs. What matters is how the team does. So far, we're sucking. Today was a disaster. Sometimes, Wilcox's teams rise out from the abyss, like in 2019 and last year.

I hope it becomes crystal clear, over the rest of this season, what we need to do. My biggest fear is that we end up in no-man's-land (a weak 7-5?), where the powers that be feel like it's not yet time to pay that big buyout.

"We had quarterback runs, which should have worked"

He blamed the players.

Putting in Rogers on 3rd down with the game on the line, where will the entire Pitt defense go?

This wasn't that.

He spent the entire press conference blaming the players.

That's not lockjaw or coachspeak. That's a supposed leader putting blame for his strategy on his team.

Rising "from the abyss" last year????

Let's look closely:
1. Beat a WSU team that finished 5-7. Won a close battle by 3
2. Beat furd who finished 3-9
3. Beat fucla who finished 7-5 and quit on Chippy
4. Lost 34-14 to a Tech team that was 6-6

That is what we are bragging about????? That was rising up????

This is not the old PAC-12 where we had to scrape up wins against multiple playoff contenders to get to 7-5, I mentioned elsewhere that 7-5 with our schedule would be a disaster and should be grounds for immediate regime change, being a middling bowl team is not going to save us when the super league launches in 2030

The "old PAC 12" had an amazing year last year. The prior 5-6 years it was a so-so conference that couldn't get a playoff team and had very few really good teams.

Did he throw them under the bus? If so, was it the proverbial bus, or a literal bus?

Maybe a possible solution is more busses. Busses for everyone below Chancellor-level. You want to not go under the bus, do your job well. Like today, for instance, Endries and Woodson: No bus for you! Everybody else needs to make their case.

I'm almost always of the opinion that making a bowl game is better than missing one because of the extra practice and exposure. This year is the exception. Miss a bowl game and finally fire this clown.

I have no idea if Wilcox will lose the team, but today he lost me for certain. The report card is as follows:

Gutlessness: the sheer lack of cajones he displayed at the end of the game, taking the ball out of our best player's (Mendoza) hand, is utterly beyond comprehension.

Terrible game day coach: he has absolutely no feel for what the crucial moments in a game call for -- none, zero, zilch, nada. There are too many example to count.

Abject stupidity: Wilcox/Bloesch insist on inserting this "Chandler Rogers Package" at ill-advised times, and the D knows what's coming. That's no knock on Rogers, he's does what's asked, but it's not fooling the D at all.

The inexplicable: going for 2 on the road after going up 6-0 early. Why? For what purpose? Because Oregon occasionally likes to do that? So the team ends up chasing points all day long and never gets back to breakeven.

Today's loss puts Wilcox's career coaching record at 39-45. But remove the 7 FCS-level wins during his tenure and his record against FBS opponents now stands at 32-45. I could handle it better if he went down swinging every time, but it's much harder to witness him turtling week in and week out.

For a variety of reasons, I've been neutral on Wilcox over the past few years. But this press conference has Mark Fox loser stink all over it.

One thing that really annoyed me, that hasn't already been pointed out by other posters is his calling out Nate Burrell for the 4 and 1 Pitt touchdown catastrophe. If the difference between turning the ball over on downs and giving up an uncontested 75 yard touchdown run comes down to one dude maintaining gap integrity, maybe the defensive scheme needs some rethinking....case in point, after looking at the replay of that touchdown, if Burrell had maintained gap integrity instead of being sealed inside by the tackle, the RB would have just romped through the B gap for the touchdown. Totally obvious the coaches got punked on that play--fair enough, it happens to all teams--but calling out the players for all his own shortcomings is inexcusable.

At this point, for me, Wilcox has to go, regardless of what happens the rest of the way.

Wilcox has been on the cusp of winning for the past 8 years.

He's not a terrible coach, but his capability has hit a ceiling - he'll never be able to get over the hump because his details & decisions that can impact the game usually goes the wrong way. We are 7 points away from being 6-0. Same as last year, and maybe the previous years. We have enough data points to expose his inability to win close games.

But we're not 6-0, so what's the problem? Sure, too many penalties, OL talent bad, terrible kicker, etc. are not "his" fault, but hey, who's the HC? Who selected the staff? Who approved the recruiting? Who sets the discipline standard? Who is ultimately accountable on how the ship is run?

Just very frustrating that while we continue the fervor that is hopeful Cal football, being let down on a weekly basis is just cruel.

This. He started calling out players in his post games last year. That he was an upstanding guy who wouldn't throw players under the bus was one of his selling points. I don't know that he has anything left. Maybe that he is still good looking and physically fit?
