I just have to ask....

Is anyone surprised?

Over the years Cal has mastered the ability to self inflict their own demise. And although I can appreciate the idea of playing the NIL game to try and bolster Wilcox into a winner, Cal's inherent institutional problems, not to mention Wilcox himself, has predictably marginalized those efforts.

Honestly, Knowlton and Wilcox are symptoms of a bigger disease. Until Cal and alums who fund this malaise start addressing the basics of running a viable IAD, everyone who wants to see Cal be successful is just pissing in the wind.

Athletics, like it or not, is the most visible way for people to engage with a University.

College Gameday was a monumental tell as to how much the students thirst for a viable football program.

So Rich Lyons what say you?

We win the TO margin +2 and TOP and have the ball in scoring range to win at the end and lose, again. Pull the lens back and. SC and Ohio State squandered incredible opportunities too yesterday.

Sure, great teams occasionally squander opportunities to win. The issue is that Cal, particularly under Wilcox, does it consistently. That is why, after 7 1/2 years, Wilcox has a losing record, has never had a winning conference record, and has only one bowl game victory (in a minor bowl). Name any other Cal coach in history with such definitive record of failure. Time for a change has long since passed.

I agree, all those losses expose coaching as the cause of the loss most especially our case. To that point Kalen Deboer is squarely responsible for why Bama lost to a good Vandy team last week after swagging around after their GA win, etc. And I'm a big KD fan.

Coaching is everything and records reflect coaching vis a vis player performance, period.

And if Kalen Deboer caused Alabama to lose multiple games over 7 1/2 seasons, . . . Well, neither Alabama nor any other self respecting program would allow this to go on for 7 1/2 seasons. Remember, even Stanford fired Buddy Teevens and Walt Harris who were nice guys but couldn't win. Buddy Teevens went on to great success at Dartmouth, even having the stadium named after him. He was a great fit there, but did not have what it takes to succeed in a Power 5 (soon to be 4) conference. Wilcox is a nice guy and might be successful at an Ivy League school, but not in the B1G, SEC, or ACC. I don't think he has what it takes to be a winner in the reconstituted Pac12 or even the MWC. Again, 7 1/2 years with no winning conference records and only 1 bowl victory.

SC and Oregon fell short.

Cal met expectations.

No one at Cal is writing to anyone about this loss. The majority of fans are sunshine pumpers complaining about how negative people like me are.

Yes. Saw game highlights of SC game. Looked like a good one. The SC kicker missed what should be a sitter of a field goal. Of course, I'm sure Oregon was especially delighted having beaten Chip yesterday.

Agree with your take on majority of fans. Most have unrealistic expectations of winning and do not take into account who we actually are as a school and athletics. This mentality of "we need to win so we can look good for the B1G when the next round of realignment happens" is absurd, unrealistic. We barely belong in the ACC due to bad coaching and mismanagement.

If that is what you believe, why contribute to California Legends instead of accepting relegation to the MWC?

I'm commenting on expectation. Some people on this board are unrealistic about this team and the admin backing it. I didn't say not to give. And I'm not advocating for a move to the MWC or a revamped P10.

I'm not surprised (unfortunately). I had a feeling we were going to lose that game. I'm just venting on message boards more than usual though.

how many of us texted a friend the second we set up that FG and proclaimed we were going to miss it? I know I did.

I predicted the missed field goal before the game and when it would happen. Seen this too many times in the last 30 years.

We won't have a choice at the next reorganization. If we're not sufficiently competitive to be invited into the B1G, we will be lucky to get into the new Pac 12 otherwise MWC will be our only hope since we cannot afford to go independent.

When it became obvious Wilcox was again playing for the FG with the runs up the middle (even putting in Rogers for a third and long run up the middle), I knew we were going to lose. Either we miss the FG and lose, or Pitt gets the ball with plenty of time to get into FG range against our soft zone, kicks the FG and we lose.
