This might be the best performance index for Cal football from my perspective as a fan:
I would like Cal to still be in the conference championship race by early November, or at the very least not mathematically eliminated, on most seasons, excluding the occasional rebuilding year. I would like to watch other conference games deep into October an in early November having a rooting interest for the underdog.
The task of meeting this benchmark should be a little bit easier now that we're in the ACC, as opposed to the P12N, which was consistently among the top 3 divisions in college football, although the fact that the ACC has 17 teams makes being a champion more difficult, but the goal is to get to the championship game, which means we 're gunning for a top-2 regular season finish.
By that standard this season is a relative failure as we're already out of it at 0-3, with 4 undefeated teams.
