I started following Cal football in 1968 when I joined the band. For 30 years the game was at 1pm.

Your source is a guy who has gotten our kick times wrong all the time. No one knows what time it will actually start buddy

No! No game should be at night, especially the Big Game. 12:30 or 1:00 start time is perfect.

Yeah, that 12:30 guess comes from someone who is making guesses based on the tentative time slots networks have given to their stations or advertisers. Doesn't mean any specific game will be in a specific tentative time slot.

The actual Big Game start time should be announced Monday. A 6 day hold is unlikely because neither team is ranked.

Hoping we get the 5pm slot on acc network

Yeah, if it's Matt Sarz then he predicted the Syracuse and Oregon State games would be night games, and that the Miami game would be a 4pm start. He's just guessing like everyone else.

At the time God intended all college football games to be played.

It sure made it easier to be sure it would be an afternoon start when Memorial didn't have lights. Although they would bring in temporary lights for the late season late afternoon games.

A quote from them AD, John Kasser, when they installed the permanent lights in 1999. "The lights will be used for televised games that start at 3:30 pm. There will be no night games at Cal".

Well, looks like Sarz nailed it this time!

It's too bad the Big Game has to be relegated to the conference network yet again. I guess this time it's mostly Furd's fault for being terrible.

Daytime big games are boring as hell. Atmosphere will be dampened. Students not as enthused.

But the seniors win again! Congrats

1) tv execs win again, you mean. they always win. it so happens that the execs' and old peoples' interests aligned here, but the geriatrics didn't factor into the decision

2) as someone who does like night games - at least a few a year - the big game has never seemed like a natural big game fit. it isn't exactly an LSU-Alabama atmosphere we're talking about.

3) our last few noonish starts were pretty embarrassing to start but by the 2nd quarter filled out ok. personally i am totally fine giving the students a little time to roll out of bed and get properly enthused prior to kickoff

4) 3:30 or 4p start would, in my mind, be the best fit for the big game.

5) at least its not on a friday like several of them were in the pac12 (if memory serves)

Feels like the history has tended to favor daytime Big Games at Cal and night games at Furd. Not sure why.

Pre 2012, for a night game to be held at CMS, there has to be significant enough TV interest so that they would pay for renting temporary lights, which was more than a nominal cost. Stanford apparently had permanent lights put up in 2000 - which is wild since that would mean they held the super bowl in 1985 with temp lights.

But I feel like there were more Stanford games at night pre 2000, but maybe that was only really the Notre Dame game which has high TV demand.

The disastourus Big Game in 1990 was a 330pm kickoff and ended in the dark.

Yes. In each of the three games picked for ESPN or ESPN2 that week, the two teams currently have a combined total of 13 wins. Cal and Stanford have a combined total of 7 wins.

I thought we might sneak onto one of the CW spots, but they went with Citadel-Clemson.

There is also one fewer ESPN slot as they have F1 Vegas coverage instead of the after dark 700p PT game.

Have to wonder if the ACCN games allow for requests from member teams in regard to start times (provided that no games actually overlap). Duke is hosting VT at 8pm ET for their 4th late night home game of the year after the Big Game on the ACCN.

From what I've seen they are still keeping a late-night option open on ESPN2. But ESPN's selections do make it seem like they might not be using it. They also put BYU-ASU in a 12:30 PT timeslot, and you'd think that would be the other prime choice for After Dark. NBC is counter-programming that slot with USC-UCLA, meanwhile, and they usually don't do a late night game.
