Most embarrassing loss ever?

When we hit rock bottom - Stanford had just gone up 21-7 (on a trick play), Nohl Williams fumbled the kickoff and the Bears looked BAD on both sides of the ball - I was thinking "This is heading to be the most embarrassing loss in Cal history"

I am SO glad this is a rhetorical question…would it have been the worst ever?

If this game determined if the Wilcox tenure should continue or end, then yes, it could be an embarrassing "loss"

It would have been bad, considering last week should have been a wake up call. And then considering it was a rivalry game against a 2 win team with multiple hall of famers there and a sellout crowd.

Giving that awful Colorado team their only win a few years ago better qualifies for "worst loss ever."

The Cardinal is a 3-win team.

As long as we're playing the hypothetical game, what if Cal had scored the first two point try? Would Wilcox have played for the field goal on the last drive to potentially send the game into overtime? And would Wilkins and/or Coe have missed? I say yes and yes.
Fortunately that alternate (but all too familiar) reality didn't play out.

Florida State picked up a second win today, against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, so the Colorado loss was arguably worse than the FSU loss.

Of the three times (sigh) we've done this under Wilcox, that Colorado loss was easily the worst. Arizona happened because half the team had to sit out with COVID. FSU is a bad team this year, but have at least been competitive in some of their losses. Colorado 2022 generally was not. Completely inexplicable and unforgivable to lose that one.

Au contraire…I think I'm enjoying the win even more knowing that we snatched victory from the jaws of a *really* humiliating defeat.

The cheez-it-bowl was the most depressing Cal football moment I will witness in my lifetime and there is no convincing me otherwise. Absolute horror show. I can't even remember the specifics it was so traumatizing.

Losing Chase Lyman was a close second and probably the single most consequential play in modern (1982+) Cal football history.

Was that the same season we lost Geoff MacArthur in rescheduled So. Miss game with a broken leg. Leaving us effed in the holiday bowl?

One of the worst losses for me didn't even take place on the field, as it was Mack Brown writing a letter… losing us the opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl. Ultimately it ended up taking the last chance Cal ever had to play in the Rose Bowl game.
That Colorado game is a distant second.

I think I've blocked the Colorado game from my memory; probably because I didn't see it (away from a TV that day).

Yes. This win is our most embarrassing loss ever. Please no one look into any of our other losses as there haven't been any, just take my word for it

If you are asking about the worst BIG GAME loss, then I'd say 1998, when we lost 10-3. Neither team was very good, and we couldn't even get 1 TD. There was absolutely no excitement at the game. It was a dreary day to boot weatherwise.

Not quite the last chance: if we'd beaten that inferior Arizona team in 2006 we also would have gone. As close as the length of DeSean Jackson's big toe . . .

Granted, we didn't know that was the case until UCLA upset USC the next week, but indeed it was.

For me, it was 2000. It was my last chance to see a Cal Big Game victory as a student. But that was also the year Cal played its first OT Big Game, which it managed to lose.

Id say the game where Deltha scored all but 1 Cal point was pretty bad. 1998 was two crap teams. In a close game.

1999 sent Furd to the Rose Bowl with 8 wins or something crazy, and only one guy on the Cal team, returning kicks, prevented it from being a complete slaughter. We even missed an xp.

Stanford celebrated with roses on the field. FML.

But TBH, Dykes 2013 in a vacuum was so much worse. But thankfully he also gave us the rest of 2013 to prepare ourselves.

Yep....for people at Cal in the 2000s, subtract 20 years and that's about the cutoff for anything we can contextualize.

For some of the older Blues on this board, the JFK assassination is ingrained in their memories. But for some of this year's new alumni, 9/11 happened before they were born. To today's students and kids, they're both ancient history.

Heck, in college, I used to joke about how history stopped at 1990 and everything after that was current events. Now, events that happened after I graduated are included in history textbooks.

Cal losing to Nevada-Reno in newly reopened CMS in 2012. I wasn't just embarrassed after that, I was shell-shocked.

I knew after halfway through the first quarter that we were not ready to play and all that game confirmed was that Tedford was on his way out and I could check out the rest of the year

Yeah, it was pretty sad to know that from the very first game in the new stadium. The thing Tedford worked so hard to build and he wasn't going to be able to enjoy it.

I thought of this while he was on the field.

Tedford built a stadium, got one season in it, and is standing in it with a team that never played in it...bummer.

He's still my benchmark for a good Cal HC.

He's a miracle HC.

It's a bummer he got PC at USC, or we might have had 3 or 4 rose bowls. Maybe he doesn't trade health for one more win.

Snyder runs into a NC caliber Washington and gets no Rose Bowl.

Meanwhile, as I mentioned before, ****ing Furd gets obliterated to open a season, wins 8 games and goes to the Rose Bowl.

So many Pac teams get pretty good and get rose bowls. Cal has top Pac teams of all time only when some other ****ing team does too.

Boogies.
