Cal To Play UNLV In LA Bowl

The California football team has accepted an invitation to play in the Art of Sport LA Bowl hosted by Gronk on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The Golden Bears (6-6) will meet No. 24 UNLV (10-3), the Mountain West Conference runner-up. The game will air on ESPN and begins at 6 p.m. PT.

"We appreciate the opportunity to play another game together this season and would like to thank the LA Bowl for selecting us," Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox said. "Playing in a bowl game is a reward for hard work throughout the season and we are excited to play in front of our Cal Family in Southern California."

Season ticket holders have until tonight at 11:59 p.m. PT to secure their priority selection for the Art of Sport LA Bowl.

Click Application under My Tickets.

Click 2024 Bowl Games – New Application.

Art of Sport LA Bowl tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, December 9, at 9 a.m. and can be purchased here: https://calbears.evenue.net/list/FB

Cal will play in a second consecutive bowl game for the first time since 2018-19 after participating in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl last season. The Bears defeated Illinois in the Redbox Bowl in 2019 and played in the Cheez-It Bowl in 2018. The LA Bowl will mark the fourth time Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox has led Cal to a bowl game, and it's the 26th bowl appearance in program history. The Bears are 12-12-1 all-time in bowl games.

The Bears and Rebels have faced off just once before on the football field with Cal beating UNLV 20-14 on Sept. 10, 2022, in Berkeley.

I am glad that we are going to a bowl game and it is in LA. But, I am not crazy about the opponent being the 10 win UNLV because they are a very good team. I was surprised that ESPN has us as a 2.5 point favorite because I thought it would be the other way around.

Go Bears!

With Odom and Marion (and other coaches?) gone and the WR coach leading the team for the LA Bowl, seems like a great shot for Wilcox to have his first winning season in five years.

He'll find a way to blow it.
The alternative is also scary: Wilcox brings home a winning overall record and is rewarded by our brilliant AD with another 6 year contrat extension.

It's very unclear what type of team unlv will have left. The spread may grow by Gametime

Are they losing players as well as coaches?

They are expecting (but who knows) a mass exodus of portal transfers because of the coaching change. It's unclear how many (if any) declared portal transfers would play in the bowl game

Very true. But if that were to happen, we'd know that Rich Lyons is not serious about Cal football.

I have waited a couple decades to hate UNLV wearing gold instead of silver.

of all the "problematic" sports team representations, the southern school being the rebels is not as close to the top as I would have expected.

I mean..who knows. You have to be a true degenerate to be betting on minor bowl games (raises hand). No one knows what the heck is going on with rosters, motivations, etc.

But if you believe Wilcox, it sounds like most of our graduating guys are playing like Buchanan and Woodson etc. We will see what the transfer portal exodus looks like.

Well 1 kicker is out of eligibility and the other is a freshman. Punter? Ott?

UNLV QB Sluka out? Has been slated for the portal to Rutgers. This would be a huge blow to them and potential plus for the Bears?

He's been out since the third 3 week of the season. The new QB might be better.

That was a funny thought.
