My goals are modest:

  • Great weather for all home games.
  • Decreased volume on those damn stacks of auxiliary speakers
  • 4PM or later home game start-times only in September.
  • At least nine tubas in the Cal Band. For the first game this past season, I counted nine in front of Sproul, but by the time they marched into the stadium there were only eight.

Having a winning conference record would be an outstanding achievement for Wilcox

I remember we used to chant "TU-BA, TU-BA" as they staggered around the north goal post in the opening. I guess we should have chanted "SU-SA, SU-SA." Does that still happen or is it another lost tradition?

Thanks for the souzaphone correction. I have the same recollection of the student's' "TU-BA" chant from the mid 1970s and I can't recall the last time I heard it. Mic Men would also lead a "Cal Band Great!" cheer as the band cleared the field for the kick-off. I haven't heard that in years. These would be so simple to do, and would enhance the connection between the band and the students.

YES! to both. I always shout "Cal Band Great!" whenever I pass band membes in their uniforms. The seem to recognize it, and smile in return.

Also, 76 trombones with 110 cornets close at hand.
