Apparently he had pneumonia and was in the hospital. He was one of the greatest of all time in my book. This news really sucked to read.

Just saw this. Sad to hear, and pneumonia? Damn! Shame to lose him, and so relatively young.

A Canadian friend of mine saw a guy trimming the hedges out front of his Oakland rental as he walked home. So he went up to the guy, patted him on the back and offered support and thanks, "Nice job and thank you!"

Sometime later, this friend got to talking to someone else about the hedge trimmer. "You know that's Ricky Henderson, right?" My friend's response was, "Who??"

Well, despite living in the US for over a decade, this friend didn't follow baseball or know anything about Ricky's fame & legacy in Oakland. Hilarious that the base-stealing record holder and Oakland's most famous baseball player had a penchant for trimming his own hedges. And my friend had no idea who he was!

That's gotta be an example of the most over-qualified gardener you could ever have!

Sad news indeed. Ricky was racking up rushing yards at Oakland Tech long before Marshawn. But in baseball, oh my...

Years ago i met ricky at ann's cafe in the dimond, i was impressed at how normal he seemed, perhaps why he trimmed hedges

Ann's cafe was a unique experience, jason kidd used to go there too, saw him there while he was still at st joes

So many fond memories of going to watch the A's play at the Coliseum while attending Cal in the early 80's. I wanna remember a great and entertaining outfield featuring Rickey, Dwayne Murphy, and Tony Armas. Since I lived on southside I was always walking to and from campus on Telegraph, and I became friends with one of the street vendors, Dave, who sold rainbow shirts and other apparel he made himself. He was also an A's fan and we went to a few games together. He said at the time Rickey's girlfriend was working at a shoe store in Oakland (?) called Hot Feet, and he said Rickey was a good guy. RIP.
