This just goes to show there was a disconnect between the players and Wilsux's coaching staff. The players played for one another and tuned out Wilsux by the end of the year. Nando decided to transfer and Wilsux's staff leaked gossip about Nando so that Wilsux doesn't look as bad.

All in all, this just makes me think Cal needs to can Wilsux even more.

It goes to show Nando worked his tail off and earned the respect of his teammates. The rest is your biased conclusions, which may or may not have some truth in them.

It is reasonable to conclude that the coaching staff and many players felt kicked in the mouth when Nando checked out.

It's actually even easier for a fan to get away from Cal Football, but please don't speak for me: I'm staying. There can be a lot of frustrations, but when we start winning more, it's gonna be sweet.

Wilsux is that you?

It was pretty obvious that Wilsux and company lost the team at least as of the NC State game. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened earlier. When Nando went "98 yards with my boys," it's telling he didn't mention the coaching staff. More importantly, there was a play where Wilsux was yelling at Nando from the sidelines and Nando didn't respond beyond some head nods.

Then with the rumors leaked by Wilsux and company (*cough Addison Ooms*), it's even more telling that his teammates are standing up for him. If anything, this further underscores that the players played for one another.

Wilsux need to be fired. He's a mediocre coach. Cal deserves better.

"Despise" is awfully strong. These are businessmen, looking out for themselves. "Men" are sometimes somewhat less than saints. This is a silly board, discussing silly entertainment businesses. Thinking he is a doodoo coach is incomprehensible, because the number one Professional Minor League Football team wanted him as their figurehead coach.

They are not lies if they are true. FM could have had integrity and told the coaches earlier (before the SMU game) that he was leaving so that they could prepare DJ Harris and EJ Caminong. He could have refrained from interfering with Cal's top QB recruit of the last several decades (and perhaps all time). He did not choose that pathway.

Shame on Wilcox for his ineptitude and failure to make talented players like FM feel appreciated, but shame on FM for the way he chose to exit the program.

FWIW, I talked with a couple people who know Mendoza (socially, not on the team) and they believe:

  • the situation was very fluid up until his announcement, he didn't have all this planned out in advance
  • he felt unappreciated by the coaching staff for many of the reasons people have already mentioned
  • he chose IU based on his family's trust in Cignetti (they don't think he was ever really "in" the portal, it was a comparison between Wilcox/Cal and Cignetti/IU)
  • he liked Cal and his teammates (and they generally liked him)
  • he's getting questionable advice from people he trusts
  • he didn't decide to sit out SMU until right before the game

Just passing on what I was told - I don't have any first-hand knowledge of anything. Biggest take-aways from this conversation: (1) the whole mess was easily avoidable, and (2) Mendoza isn't a bond villain - he's a young guy getting bad advice and acting on emotion. The whole thing is just sad in so many ways.

CJ did not perform poorly as the game was close when he was in.

EJ . . ., well, I don't know what our coaches saw in him as he seemed like a deer caught in headlights. (Then again, so does our head coach.)

We will never know, but at least we would have had a shot. More importantly, the coaches could have begun looking and finding a replacement through the portal much earlier.

Well, I sat with Bears on the 45 yd line and you could sense from the start - even knowing the boys were high as kites with SOFI, that they didn't come to play. More obvious in the 2nd half with our defense was gone, along obvious with our offense. I consider the game a field trip to see SoFi, where I will never return although living in Long Beach. Our $180 VIP seats would have been worth $$$$ for a pro game. Who needs 5 star restrooms when we were reared on port-a-potties and piss wet restrooms at CMS! The entertainment factor and prices however at SOFI are through the roof.
Bring back bottled beer and cigars at CMS. Should get us back in the Rose Bowl!

Been posting here for 16 years so calling me a troll is one though. I just hate seeing Cal fans spread lies about a player who gave his heart and soul to the program. I despise Wilcox for making kids like that our enemies with his incompetence and poor leadership.

As seen by the LA Bowl, clearly EJ and CJ just needed one week of practice in order to dominate SMU

CJ looked decent and would have likely won the game against the #24 team in the country if he stayed in. Were you there?
I feel bad for everyone that had to suffer LA traffic just to see our third string QB get injured and the team lose by two scores to a G5 program.

Even grumpy curmudgeons that wake up on the wrong side of the bed every morning can handle the 10 minutes of traffic from LAX to SOFI.

10 minutes my a$$. It would take longer than that just to get out of the Sofi parking lot. Attending games by this garbage staff doesn't make you a true fan, it just shows that you are an insane idiot for expecting Wilcox to get different results from doing the same things over and over again.

Only a heroin addict like you can live in la la land and pretend like this football team is just rainbows and butterflies. Quit the drugs and underage girl addiction buddy, it's time to check yourself into rehab

It only takes 10 minutes to get to SOFI from LAX but apparently you are now grumpy about leaving a parking lot after a football game. Are you Carl Fredricksen?

My good friend's son was heavily recruited by Wilcox 2 years ago. My friend who also played college football told me that Wilcox was the most sincere likeable coach of the 8 offers his son received. Wilcox and his crew treated his family with the utmost respect.

The main reason his son did not accept the offer was due to his brother being a student at another Pac 12 team.

Since a majority of us don't know both sides to the story I wonder why it's so easy to pass judgment on Wilcox regarding Nando leaving.

Because the team is not winning and fans have an easy target to blame.

I didn't mean to insult you. I didn't recognize your handle and thought falseintellext was an alias for a Furd poster since their motto is intellectual brutality. I don't want to pile on FM anymore and supported Ott's X post calling for a truce.

Sorry to see him go and wish him well with the Hoosiers. Pretty cool to be able to join his little brother at an historic institution on the ascendant under new management. The cost to him is the priceless Cal sheepskin and great opportunity to go down in history as one of the Bears' best players, ever. Then again, I am sure he has a big time injury insurance policy paid by Indiana and fully expects to be playing on Sundays. Oh well, it's a new NIL era with TV driving the bus.
