He's the only QB left now that Aguilar committed to UCLA. Going to be a long season if we can't get him. Next year's team would look like Syracuse assuming we get Brown

1. "who's left in the portal" isn't the bottom line....still a lot of conversations going on. Cal is an opportunity to start, plain and simple...not a ton of places have more than a chance to compete at the position...
2. I am certainly not assuming Brown is close to McCord, but I like the thinking...
3. First year Syracuse HC Fran Brown was the hottest coach available last year if you talk to people who know more than just how to post on message boards. I don't think Wilcox is going to do anything that will have Cal looking "like Syracuse," but I am willing to be hopeful about the new Offensive coaches...

Cal does have a wide open QB job. That should be appealling to many possible candidates. But Cal really needs to hit a home run here. If they take a current backup that player has to hit. The best solution would be for Cal to get a current productive starter to leave and join the program. A more proven commodity.

Brown is a nice prospect. But far from a sure thing. He has played little. Many compare him to Joe Burrow because Burrow had to leave OSU to get a shot. He may be good, but even Burrow needed a full year to reach full potential and having Joe Brady be the offensive brain during his last season at LSU. Oh and having a loaded roster of future NFL guys helped and throwing to NFL stars like Jamar Chase and Justin Jefferson as well.

Cal is not set up anywhere close to what LSU was. Brown could be fine, but just as likely is a game manager that will need everything to go well for Cal to break through. Cal needs to find a QB somewhere and if Brown is the best they can find so be it. Just need to be beating the bushes hard to find that difference maker.

I am very interested in how the offense evolves with Rolovich and Harsin. They bring different schemes into the program. I think Cal would be better suited to integrate more of Rolovichs scheme, but my guess is that Harsin wins out. Will be an interesting Spring regardless.

There will be another round of transfers after spring ball. That said, it is far more preferred to have the QB go through spring ball.

I certainly wouldn't make the Burrow/LSU comparison-couldn't agree with you more.
Staying with the Buckeye theme: McCord comparison? Maybe, but McCord went to Cuse with a lot of snaps under his belt.
How about a Mendoza comparison? We know one thing, and believe another: We know Brown was more highly rated out of HS, and we believe he is going to get a chance to develop under better coaches than Mendoza had.
Would add one more thing about Brown: I don't think there is a QB in play that has had to face a better defense than what Brown has endured in practice. And has had extra weeks to practice against them thanks to their playoff wins.
Not a rationalization for lack of game experience, but still something that I like as a positive...

As the rules we used to consider almost sacred continue to crumble around us, maybe the next one to go is limited eligibility.

At this point, I'd take a guy with a floor as a game manager and then in the spring or next year look to add another guy with high upside (like JKS). The reality is that Cal probably needs two game manager types given the current pipeline.

Why not? A student is a student. It takes some kids longer to graduate than others.

Then the the next one to go would be the requirement that they take classes.

Maybe just "encourage" extension classes, like "Learn French while part of the three week guided tour of local Paris hidden treasure bistros", or "Brush up on English Local Dialects in the guided tour of pubs that haven't yet closed.", all while getting paid a stipend.

We kind of took a pretty big step towards that when we allowed grad transfers to be enrolled in a "certificate program" (an idea that I am not opposed to, given the current realities). Yes, technically, they are "taking classes", but...

I believe the Haas certificate program was created to address the fact that Cal graduate degree programs are very hard to get into and almost all Masters programs take more than one year. I took a look at the Haas website, but it's not clear which certificate programs are available. In any case, I assume that they are moderately rigorous and present useful info. Probably more useful than some of the following which I was required to learn at Cal:
  • How much is a mole. No, not that kind of mole, I mean Avogadro's Number: 6.023*10^23. Amazingly, this never comes up in polite conversations.
  • What is demand elasticity?
  • Convert miles/hour to furlongs/fortnight -actually that's a joke in response to our professors' requirement that we be able to convert metric measurements to English and vice versa. Remember that everything going metric was just around the corner? It still is.
  • Compare and contrast Pilgrims vs Puritans in colonial America

I'm joking, of course. It was the PROCESS OF LEARNING this stuff that was valuable, not the stuff itself. Just like running bleachers isn't so that you become better at running bleachers, it's to prepare you for other activities.

Looking at Cal's graduate transfers in football and basketball, I'd say none of them are sure-things to make it in the pros, so I hope they're paying attention in their certificate classes, because their future may depend on it.
