I'm disappointed that Fernando left, and I really don't like the way he did it, particularly what he was reported to have said to Caminong JKS. But I think there are a lot of 35 year-old to 75 year-old guys on this board who forget what it was like to be a 20 year-old. How confident were you at 20? We made mistakes, we didn't think things through, and we took things personally that we shouldn't have. We were growing up, but we weren't grown up, yet.

When Jeff Tedford arrived at Cal, Kyle Boller's confidence was shot, he'd gotten his brains beat in for three years and completed barely 50% of his passes. Tedford didn't recruit over Boller, he taught him, encouraged him, COACHED HIM.

Like Boller, Fernando was an important player for this team, and obviously an emotional, effusive personality. His coaches should have been aware of that. He stepped up after two portal QB transfers crapped out. Did any coaches explain to Fernando all the facts behind bringing in Rogers? Because Fernando apparently thought that Rogers was guaranteed the starting slot and things cratered from there. Does anybody honestly think that Wilcox and staff handled the Fernando situation correctly?

At this point, it's water under the bridge. Too damn bad because Cal football hasn't had a lot of good stories to tell over the last 10-15 years and Fernando's was one. We still have Ott and The Jet and that's something. And we have Wilcox and his staff, and that's damn near nothing.

EDIT - I meant to say Fernando's conversation with JKS, not Caminong. Sorry for the misleading error.

Wilcox is no Jeff Tedford. Not even close.

If he just harmed himself, that's one thing, but what he did and how he did it harmed others. And, that takes utter stupidity or a character "glitch" (let's say, 'cause he is still immature). What did he think would happen and did he think that through?

Hearstmining: Did you mean what FM reportedly said to FM or did he allegedly say something negative to Caminong as well? If so, I missed that.

Like you said. At this point, it's water under the bridge.

I only know what I've read here and one of the reputedly more reliable sources says that Caminong and FM had a phone conversation and whatever FM told him caused Caminong to switch to Oregon at the very last minute.
My error! I meant Fernando's conversation with JKS, not Caminong. I will update that. Thanks for catching it.

How many of us, while a college student, did something stupid ignoring the impact on others? Maybe you borrowed a roommate's car and got in an accident. Maybe you had a one-nighter with someone and your girlfriend found out. As far as "harm", nobody got physically hurt. Personally, I've been layed off three times in corporate restructurings - that's harm. Wilcox still has his job. Rogers actually got a chance to start a game - too bad he got hurt. Fans are stuck with another lousy season and murky future. Like I said, Fernando was a great story for Cal and much needed - too bad it had an unhappy ending.

On 12/30 my post read:

Can JKS enter the portal after spring ball at Oregon and end up at Cal???

And this was after I started the post of Mendoza going to Indiana before it was official.

Guess i should stock up on Lotto tickets.
