Now that we know J Ott is back for his fourth season, and the Jet is back for his third season, if Jaydn comes back healthly I would hope that in specific situations the new OC may decide to have these two on the field at the same time. Jaydn in the slot could be a plus, as anybody who has watched him knows he's an excellent receiver. I don't think I'm crazy, and again this would not be a constant thing but something to be used when necessary. Does it make sense or am I out of my mind?

as a decoy, maybe. whenever he has been on the field, he has gotten the ball and opposing D's target him.

Both Ott and The Jet have been effective receivers. I'm barely even a casual 49er fan, but couldn't Cal use either of them in a role similar to what the 49ers do with Deebo Samuel? Per Wikipedia, in 2021, he rushed 59 times regular season and 27 times in the playoffs. With Ott at RB and Jet as a WR, or vice versa, with the potential for either to run or receive, you would create maximum uncertainty for the defense.

EDIT: I'm assuming a more effective OL. There seem to be two schools of thought on whether that will occur next season, and I won't join that discussion.

Maybe they can design a few more runs up the middle?

Honestly, I would think that if we used it the ball could ultimately go to either one of them, forget the decoy status. I just think that for a team that has struggled offensively, why not get them both on the field once in a while?

I think Ott needs to adjust his approach from playing every down with patience and create some variation by just hitting the hole with power and speed. I've always felt that the Jet has been a more effective runner because he is far more decisive and is not looking for a grand canyon sized hole to open up every down, and instead shoots through what is available in that moment and tries to initiate contact at the second level. Ott seems to be tackled more in the back field because he dances more waiting, waiting, waiting....

How about an OL that opens some holes for them to burst thru? Maybe behind a leading fullback or TE? How about receivers that block on outside runs? How about WRs with some speed and a QB with an arm that can get them the ball in stride so that opposing defenses get punished when they stack the box?

Two running backs on the field at the same time is not weird at all and was the norm for most of football history (even if one were a "fullback" back in the day, both were often "runners"). I think there is wisdom in either rotating the backs as lead backs OR as having them on the field at the same time, or both. Either way, these are two of the best offensive players on the field, so one would hope the offensive coaching staff finds was to incorporate both as key contributors.

I would guess that had we had a better OL and a WR group that blocked better Jet would still have excelled more than Ott. Ott may not have been in his best form all season, but he was healthy enough to play. I'm glad Jet was there to do what he did for the team. I hope he is getting his NIL.
