Why don't they have uniforms? For such a highly funded system, you would think they would have something other than Nike outlet gear.

It's a shame Cal never got to play in the Rose Bowl on new years. Bummer.

I know there are a lot of band enthusiasts here, and I dont want to destroy anyone else's joy, but I never understood the appeal of marching bands. Just not my thing.

Hard to compete with the Ohio State band, unless you're not a fan of traditional Midwest marching bands and greatly prefer the HBCU style.

The Cal Band tries to be like Ohio State (except less "stuffy"), but they don't have anything close to the instrumentation and also have lost some precision in the past decades.

Then there was Texas, "the Show Band of the Southwest". Not a fan, personally,

I agree that the Cal Band is not quite up to par with what some of us remember (disclaimer, I play no musical instrument) but per this site: https://music.osu.edu/sites/music.osu.edu/files/marching-band-faq-2015.pdf , TOSU marching band offers some scholarships and academic credit to all. I don't think any of this is true at Cal. Sure, I wish they were bigger, I wish they were louder, and I wish they still played Hail to California after the Star Spangled Banner, but I still get a thrill when they march out of the north tunnel for the first home game of the season. And my wife, who never attended Cal, goes to the games with me primarily for the band.

What did you expect? By now it's painfully obvious that the majority of this board has long retired and are now living in their final decade on this earth. They are so drugged up on sedatives that they are living in an alternate reality where Cal is actually a decent football program and our Nobel laureates and moral grandstanding earned us the right to look down on successful football organizations.

Ohio State's band isn't called "The Best Damn Band in the Land" for no reason.

They are polished, precise, look and perform with pride and excellence, and bring a spirit to the game that few bands can match.

Oregon looked like refugees from a Nike Outlet store. They were slow, not at all stimulating, and I hate to say it (but I will) their version of the anthem was pretty, but almost "sad" sounding. The only worse dressed band I've seen is stanford. But they're not a band, they are "banned".

Cal Band at one time was pretty close to tOSUmb in comparison. They are still sharp, spirited, and often fun to watch (especially pre-game). They are not, however, anywhere near as flashy or as precise as they used to be. They've dropped some cool traditions, and just don't seem to think externally as much as they seem to think internally. But there is no one on the west coast even close to them (except the Husky band, which is getting better and better), so they are the class of the west....... for now.

Sure enjoyed that Japanese High School band, and the Jacksonville State "Sonic Boom". Oregon almost put me to sleep.

Oregon is all about presentation, with a new uniform for every event. Trying to be flashy... and then their band is just wearing T-Shirts? ***?

It doesnt fit the style of the band. It doesnt fit the style of the school.

It just looks like Oregon doesnt give a **** about the band and only puts as much into it as is legally required or something. And oregon gives a **** about everything. Their team swag for non-revenue is cool... and the band gets t-shirts.

We're going on 7 decades removed from our last trip and none of us would care if we showed up in Pasadena wearing leotards, critiquing bands is definitely on point for a fanbase of a losing program

Yes, would trade a fair amount of pageantry for some more wins, but it's not a zero-sum game.
