Why would Briwn leave before a potential OSU nation title win?

And a chance to get snaps that every college player dreams about but almost none ever take.

I don't think he'd leave before the game but I think it's generally accepted that he plans to transfer to have a chance to start next year

You mean, Fernando's lack of character.

Devin Brown doesn't show up in the student directory when I search.
Given Harsin hanging with JKS and the sour taste that "qb1 promises had last year" perhaps this went away with JKS or perhaps it was never a thing to begin with.

He's definitely in the student directory: https://www.berkeley.edu/directory/

Whether or not that means he is still coming is another story.

Then again it also still shows Fernando Mendoza in the directory (albeit with no contact information): https://www.berkeley.edu/directory/?search-term=fernando+mendoza

I don't buy the "QB1 promises" anyway. Occam's Razor says that was just Fernando trying to save face. Look at it logically:

- Chandler was apparently "promised" QB1 but Fernando started with QB1 reps in spring and fall, they split them pretty evenly but it was clear that Fernando was given every chance to win it and the first crack at it

- The only QB who complained about the supposed "promise" was the WB who started every game until he held himself out at the end of the year

- The most likely reality, in my opinion, is that Chandler was promised an even shot at the job and Fernando took offense. That's ridiculous to me since Fernando was good but not great his first season and shouldn't have been guaranteed anything other than a fair shake which he was clearly given. He hadn't proven to be the quality of QB who you go into the season saying "he's our guy and you need to prove otherwise"

- We went into the season with it being pretty undecided since neither outperformed the other by a meaningful degree in camp

So the whole argument from his family that we "promised" it to Chandler and they were wronged despite being the starter for the whole season just doesn't pass muster, especially when Chandler had no complaints and waited until the end of the portal to enter his name to transfer

Sounds phony
We are to believe that Cal promised the starting Job to Chandler.
So we are asked to believe that Mendoza was angry at Cal DESPITE the fact that Mendoza and Chandler were each given an opportunity to compete and Mendoza won the starting job.
All the evidence is to the contrary
Are we to believe the evidence or Mendoza?

CJ Harris just transferred out. Idk if that guarantees Devin Brown is on the way but it's a good indicator. If he wasn't then it would just leave true frosh JKS and redshirt frosh EJ Caminong, both of whom would be very beatable for the starting job based on collegiate experience. JKS hasn't played a snap yet and EJ only got relief work in the bowl game and didn't look ready yet

CJ showed some promise in limited minutes. I'm kind of bummed, but completely understand that he'd be assumed to be the 3rd string guy, and if you want to play, sitting in the 3 spot at Cal is not going to get you noticed by anyone.

Yeah, he would have came to Cal last season knowing he'd be 3rd string though, and quite possibly could have been 2nd string this season. He looked much better than the majority of backups we've witnessed at Cal over the past decade.

People may be selling Caminong short. Next fall, he'll be at exactly the same point in his career as Mendoza was at the beginning of the 2023 season: a redshirt freshman stuck at #3 on the depth chart behind two incoming portal transfers. And look what happened?

Sure, EJ had that deer in the headlights look in the LA BlahBlah Bowl, but he did show a live arm and probably more athleticism than Mendoza. I'm not in love with EJ, and would rather the transfers didn't flame out as they did in 2023, but it would be great if he made spring and fall practice interesting.

Turns out that Mendoza, despite the awesome persona he projected, had a really insecure side to him. It was 100% reasonable that we brought in Rogers and that the two had an open competition. And Mendoza won, for goodness sake! I guess he was also upset that Rogers got some chances during the season. I thought those decisions were reasonable, too (except for maybe once or twice). Get over it, man.

I'm glad CJ came to Cal, but I never saw anything to indicate that he was ever going to be someone in the running for the starting job. Just a limited quarterback talent. Not horrible, though. In fact, pretty good for a third-stringer. Best of luck to the young man
