Totally lame.

While he proved to be a poor head coach, he was an extremely effective AD at BYU. He navigated rough seas pretty well for BYU.

He certainly found his place to succeed. Good guy, if you ever spent time with him. Damn, he had a bad run here, but the ice cream in Provo was SO GOOD.

Would Cal's athletic department be better or worse off if they'd hired Holmoe as AD 10 years ago? I say, better. Not sure it could have gotten much worse.

This is related to a long standing joke. Its handles, holmophobic, holmoecaust, etc.

Its not related to his time at BYU, but a throwback joke for the oldsters who remember what humor is.

Good point re: Larry Scott. I was actually thinking about the WyFox coaching hires. Getting rid of Larry earlier would arguably have had a greater impact on Cal sports - there might still be a real PAC 12.

The chancellors and presidents were in love with Larry. They bought his schtick. The AD's didn't have a vote.

I met Tom at an Alumni function soon after he became HC, really nice guy…..but damn he was a terrible HC .
I fully believe Tom would never become a HC if the 49ers would not have stolen Marucci just before LOI day.

A good friend of mine from high school was youth pastor at a church in Berkeley near campus during the Holmoe years.


As a result, he got to know quite a few of the football players through Bible study and other activities. He never told me any details, but it was very clear the culture in the team was toxic, with different standards of behavior and performance applied to different players.

My friend was a lifelong Niners fan and LOVED Holmoe the player, but it pained him to admit that he had a rather poor opinion of Holmoe the man.
