Doing the wave

Someone please tell me where this idea that doing the wave in a sporting event is blasphemy in the Bay Area? Last night, in the Giants game against the Rangers, a wave was started at Oracle Park. To me, it's just people having fun and God forbid, enjoying themselves on a Friday night. The Giants lost 2-0 so there wasn't much on-field action going on throughout the game. I remember doing the wave at CMS most recently at the Miami game. So what's the big deal?

I have no problem with fans doing the Wave as long as the noise isn't interfering with the game (probably more of an issue for football). It looks like they were doing it during a break in the action, so it's fine by me. Most likely those tweets are just the older geezers remembering when the Wave became uncool in the 1990s. Times change, what was uncool can become cool again. Besides, it's easy for the fans to master. The hard part is getting everyone to agree when to stop.

They probably think it's an LA thing that's why.

I did the wave at both candlestick and the coliseum in the early 80s, many times. It's great.

I think the wave is dumb. But especially in that moment. It's late in a tight ball game. Win and you're in first. Giants are up to bat, which I imagine could be distracting for the hitters. And the entire stadium is not watching the game but watching and participating in the wave. It's one thing when it's a blowout. But not in that spot.

I don't really give a crud about the wave, but I enjoy seeing families and kids enjoying it, that's cool. Hell, when I was a kid, I thought it was cool when Kenny Easley threw me his sweaty ass wrist band even though he was on Ucla. So for kids its different.

As for the wave at critical junctures, I gotta believe that professional athletes are just that, professional, partly because of their ability to focus at times even with distractions. Personally, I gotta believe that there is way more possibility for distraction when your home team is down a run in the ninth and you've got runners on, and the home team fans are going ape donkey when the opposing pitcher is about to wind up and pitch. I think there are a lot of scenarios like that that are more distracting potentially, than the wave.

For a knowledgeable fan, it can be super annoying that people seem to be oblivious to a critical situation, but like I said, these are pros, I don't think the wave registers much to them.

I agree with your conclusions. I like the Wave when it is done well but the fans must be in unison. The toughest part is knowing when to stop.
That is where it helps to have a cheeeader/Mic-man

The wave was introduced in the Oakland Coliseum during the playoffs between the A's and the NY Yankees.
