Does anyone know who Cal may be targeting or what quality backs are available? Still a few Cal guys in the portal that may have second thoughts?

They may return to the school they were at if the team still wants them on scholarship. I suppose if they are still in good academic standing, they always have the option of continuing at that school as a "regular" student. (Not a bad deal at all to get preferred admission into Cal and then even have some of the years paid for... my kids should be so lucky.)

"More than 31,000 student-athletes entered the transfer portal in 2023 alone, with approximately 45% successfully moving to new schools. That means more than half did not land with a new team, leaving their athletic and academic careers in question. "AD Advisors and sports analytics firm Timark Partners released a study Friday that indicated 70% of men's basketball players from power conferences and the Big East who entered the transfer portal were unable to find a new school or transferred down. (The study placed schools in three tiers based on the amount of money spent on their basketball programs, and transferring down meant moving to a program in a lower tier.)"https://frontofficesports.com/ncaa-transfer-portal-hits-record-numbers-again/

With 15 player rosters, 33% of Power conference players are starters. 67% are not starters. On a 20 player roster, 75% are not starters (it is not that stark, there are "sometime" starters).

If you are already a starter in a Power conference you are probably less likely to enter the Portal. It would not be surprising if the 70% of Power conference players in the Portal who "move down" do so because they are mostly the 67% to 75% who are not starting at that level and are looking for playing time (and a coach that wants them).

Let's be honest, they didn't give a damn about their academic career. Also, no one is forcing these kids into the portal, sometimes you have to let people make decisions for themselves, even if they are bad decisions.
