This is something I have been advocating for Cal, though maybe just for the revenue sports. Not only would it give the program more financial options, it would remove decision making in sports from the academic administrators who are rarely fans and even more rarely knowledgeable, and put it in the hands of the alums who care so much about our sports teams and traditions and can run the revenue sports like the professional sports franchises that now most should now recognize that they are.

That's a positive step, but it doesn't go far enough. It only focuses on fundraising and revenue generation in. I'd like to see Cal's football program (and probably the men's and women's basketball programs) completely run by a Board comprised of knowledgeable alums and outside experts, independent of Athletic Department leadership. The Chancellor would be the only university official to serve on the Board. Ron Rivera could report to that Board and run the football program. Another GM could similarly run the basketball programs.

Agreed, for Cal improved management, directed by the alums, is just as critical as revenue enhancement.

Note that UK's entire athletics department will be under the newco. UK's newco will have a governance board including UK officials and sports management professionals. At Cal, I'd rather it be alums and not university officials on the board, though Lyons as an alum and chancellor, would be OK to start. The elected board might consist of big donors and Cal alums with professional sports management experience who could hire and direct sports management and marketing professionals.

Donations would earn voting shares for board members. Some decisions could be put to a direct shareholder vote. Having it be only the revenue sports would allow the non-revenue sports to continue under the amateur model and university control (I think outright pay to play is inevitable). If the newco controlled all the sports, it would eventually have lawsuits for equal pay for the non-revenue sports.
