Pretty astonishing actually......
Depending on how one calculates, I was a member of Cal's Sports Medicine team 22-25 years. I retired from private practice in May 2022. Sometime in the beginning of this year, my name was quietly removed from the Cal Sports Medicine website. Not as much as a "thank you." ... but I'm still asked for money.
I was recruited to be a volunteer member of the Cal Sports Medicine team by then Head Team Physician Cindy Chang in the fall of 1999 to create what became one the finest sports dental programs in the PAC12 , let alone the NCAA.. Unfortunately, after Dr Chang stepped down, her replacements were not as invested in having such an effective and elite program. Though Sports Dentistry is not recognized as a specialty by the American Dental Association, the Academy For Sports Dentistry offers a certification as a Team Dentist and Fellow status. US Olympics requires all their volunteer dental network providers to be ASD certified, as well as many professional sports leagues.
For the last 20 years, I was the only certified sports dentist and fellow on the Cal SM team, as well as a US Olympic Volunteer Network dentist. The current head team physician took the helm 9 years ago. She has never taken the time to introduce herself to me personally, let alone have a phone conversation regarding an athlete's treatment. That's quite an amazing feat since she leads a team that's purported to be a "comprehensive program" that has a "staff of acclaimed sports medicine practitioners." To my knowledge, Cal no longer has a certified sports dentist among their staff.
Thank you Cindy for your vision to create a true comprehensive team. Cal, along with UCLA , were the sports dental programs that other schools strived for..
And......a big shout out to the glue of the sports medicine team, Ryan Cobb. He's the hardest working and most knowledgeable member of the team. Thank you, Ryan. You are the greatest.
As always....
Cal Band Great!!!
Go Bears!!
Cheers!
